Here is Nokia's product page: http://www.nokia.co.uk/link?cid=EDITORIAL_29121 The phone is a standard series 60 smart phone, and the first that nokia made that supported 3G. Other than that it will have a similar feature set to the 7610, or the 6680 that came before and after. The design is about 2 years old now, so the hackers may have found a way to unlock it, though if unlocking is important to you, I would buy one SIM free, of make that a requirement when you negotiate with the network.

I've read comments on other forums referring to 6630/6680/N70 as 'bb5' phones. At present I believe there is no unlocking solution for these phones. Had to pay £20 to Orange to have my 6680 unlocked. The reason being they have to go back to Nokia to obtain the code. I could be wrong on all this....so don't take it as 100% fact!

No they can't be unlocked unless you pay your operator - fees depend on who the operator is. I am lucky enough to have received one unlocked (clearance sale 2 years back) and I think the phone is great. Battery life is not as good as normal phone but because it is a smart phone you can run apps like tomtom.

Nokia takes the security of their products very seriously, and considers an unlock hack to be as serous a remote buffer overrun is a desktop or server OS. They are putting in a lot of effort to make sure it does not happen. As those phones are quite new, they are the product of this new security policy, so there is a good chance that they will never get cracked. Basically if you want the phone unlocked, then factor in what the network are charging because the days of the phone unlocker in a back street shop are numbed. I work for Nokia BTW. |

There is (or was) a solution for the 6630/6680, but getting it done was near to impossible to achieve unless you were in Belgrade or China when a bunch of unlocking engineers got together. But chrestomanci is right, if you're buying a mid to high end Nokia through a networked subsidised deal, make sure the network its locked to will provide an unlock code, and find out how much they will charge, as I've heard ridiculous sums quoted from customer service reps. Or buy sim-free, as the subsidies on the handsets aren't always as high as you'd think. Other manufacturers, either by choice or design, are pretty much fair game for unlocking though. Nokia's system just leaves the producers of sim-lock reprogramming gear scratching their heads.
