Replacing my S775 mobo, need advice

    Hi all,
I seem to have bricked my ASUS P5K deluxe Wifi-AP S775 mobo by trying to update the BIOS. I followed ASUS' instructions, but the update failed, and the 'crashfree BIOS' system is not recovering it. I have ongoing 'support' on the ASUS website FWIW (not much), but it's outside warranty and I think I need to look at replacing it.
<-----Setup is listed in my drop-down
I've been looking on SCAN (first choice of vendor) and they all seem to be DDR3, and mATX. Now this isn't the end of the world but I don't need mATX (Antec P180), and I only have DDR2 RAM at the moment so I'd have to buy some. I'd like a board that's able to overclock a bit too, in an ideal world. This is a stopgap measure to have a working PC in the next couple of months, as I'm getting married in April and after that my spending imbargo will be lifted, so possibly i5 mATX system coming my way, hence I'd rather not spend too much now. Have also posted in WANTED section.
Could anyone point me towards an affordable and appropriate replacement?
    Thanks for reading,
    Max

Re: Replacing my S775 mobo, need advice

Your really looking at second hand tbh.

New prices seem really high for what your getting, although going DDR3 (and buying some super-cheap DDR3 and selling your DDR2) would probably work at best if buying new.

If your RAM is 2 x 2GB, it should sell for more then you can buy new DDR3 for.
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu
    HTPC: AsRock Z77 Pro 4 / 3770K@4.2GHz / 24GB / GTX 1080 / SST-LC20 / Antec TP-550 / Hisense 65k5510 4K TV / HTC Vive / 2 x 240GB SSD + 12TB HDD Space / Race Seat / Logitech G29 / Win 10 Pro
    HTPC2: Asus AM1I-A / 5150 / 4GB / Corsair Force 3 240GB / Silverstone SST-ML05B + ST30SF / Samsung UE60H6200 TV / Windows 10 Pro
    Spare/Loaner: Gigabyte EX58-UD5 / i950 / 12GB / HD7870 / Corsair 300R / Silverpower 700W modular
    NAS 1: HP N40L / 12GB ECC RAM / 2 x 3TB Arrays || NAS 2: Dell PowerEdge T110 II / 24GB ECC RAM / 2 x 3TB Hybrid arrays || Network:Buffalo WZR-1166DHP w/DD-WRT + HP ProCurve 1800-24G
    Laptop: Dell Precision 5510 Printer: HP CP1515n || Phone: Huawei P30 || Other: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Pro 10.1 CM14 / Playstation 4 + G29 + 2TB Hybrid drive

    What about this one?

    Gigabyte GA-P41T-D3P, Intel G41, S 775 , DDR3, SATA II - 3Gb/s, PCIe (x16), ATX

Oops, sorry, DDR3. Forget I said anything.

And to add to what Shaithis said, it's only about £35 for 8Gb of DDR3 at the mo...

Thanks guys. Yeah, I did think about second hand of course, but I was amazed at the prices even older boards are demanding on fleabay. I didn't think DDR2 would be worth much second hand, but yes, DDR3 is crazy value at the mo, and 8gb would be nice... just more monies

Cheers for the reply Cat. Do you have anything against MSI? What made you go for Gigabyte and ASUS? I'm kind of developing a thing against ASUS at the moment. Your suggestion of making the RAM decision for the next build too makes a lot of sense.

Interestingly the used mobos I'm seeing are the same price as the new mATX boards on SCAN

EDIT: spotted them in Today Only, I guess that was the reason then! Cheers Cat

Re: Replacing my S775 mobo, need advice

DDR2 is getting hella expensive new, so 2x2GB DDR2 (particularly good quality stuff like your XMS2) will sell well to people looking for an upgrade.

DDR3 is dirt cheap right now too, so getting a DDR3 S775 motherboard then carrying the RAM over to a new build is great advice, DDR3 is going to be the desktop RAM standard for at least the next 2 - 3 years.

Re: Replacing my S775 mobo, need advice

One problem is you can pretty much forget overclocking on a G41 motherboard, the BIOS will just not have the options for it.

I think 2nd hand would be the best option, esp if you don't plan to keep it that long . . . wow I'm amazed at the prices p35, p45, x38 and x48 boards are going for.
    Ask on the forsale section.

Rats also looks like the BIOS chip is soldered in if you're skilled enough with a soldering Iron you could get a new BIOS chip and try to fit it much cheaper option, only £11 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIOS-CHIP-...item588e379978

    Hello

    I'm still running a E2140 on a GA-965p-DS3p @ overclock 3ghz, DD2, for about 4 years now, cooler is a Arctic freezer 7...would have thought a cheap buy S/H.
I'd post the pics from CPU-Z and core temp 0.95 (from my gallery) but don't know how to upload.

    regards
2nd computer gigabyte P965ds3p, 7770 E2140@2.9ghz, corsair HX520 6 years stable, replaced now with E8400@3.9ghz and will overclock more when I'm bored.

By the way you can buy a replacement BIOS chip for under £10 on eBay - just search for "ASUS P5K BIOS". I had a similar failure when updating the BIOS on a Foxconn H67 motherboard and I just sent the BIOS chip to their support centre in Holland and they sent me back a working chip.

    OP are you still looking?

I did the same with my P5B DL about 18 months ago, there are people on ebay who will reflash it for you if its soldered to the board, not too expensive.
