Must admit to being a Thomas Newman fan. He's scored a lot of my favourite films recently, with American Beauty and Road to Perdition probably being the standouts.

Favourite of all time is probably Bernard Herman's Taxi Driver score - perfectly captures the mood of the film.

Oh, The Irreversible soundtrack by Thomas Bangalier is pretty good too, has a nice late 70's/early 80's zombie flick vibe to a large percenatge of it.

Total sucker for the strings master Craig Armstrong in general - but it was his film scores that got me in the 1st place - Plunkett & MacLean then other bits for movies like the Balcony Scene from Romeo & Juliet, a rework of his track Glasgow (Love Theme) that became the main theme in Love Actually... the list goes on, he's done so many he has a "Greatest Hits" of his Film Works

He is the MASTER of music that you know, but don't know who it's by....

Re: Film soundtracks. What do you like?

I love a lot of hans zimmer stuff (especially last samurai). Bill Conti does some good stuff, as does Alan Silvestri (love the back to the future music, and a film from my childhood - flight of the navigator)

One of my favourites though is the goonies soundtrack, by Dave Grusin. It's a film I grew up with and still my favourite film. I've got both the soundtrack release (mainly with pop songs on it, and some of the score) and the full score of the film, that was recently released as part of the 25th anniversary.

I do tend to like the more classical scores though, like last samurai, batman (begins and dark knight), shawshank redemption, godfather, and most of the bond films.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Re: Film soundtracks. What do you like?

John Williams is superb, I'm quite a fan of his Jurassic Park theme tune too. I quite like the Star Trek movie themes (and tv themes that they're based on), my favourite being Star Trek VIII: First Contact - the soft part in the middle is just beautiful, so much so that I taught myself how to pick it on the guitar.

Don't know if BBC's Doctor Who counts as it's not a movie (although there was one movie back in 1996, but that wasn't by the BBC) but the soundtracks to that can be truly excellent. They have had a Doctor Who Prom twice now, the 2008 one being my favourite.

Yes. I'm also a big Hans Zimmer fan (as everybody ) .. I especially liked the Pirates of the Carribean soundtracks and one of the main theme songs of True Romance (You're so cool.)

    I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Zulu

The "Men of Harlech" rendition was pretty awesome as well...

Re: Film soundtracks. What do you like?

Your mention of zulu reminds me of another one of my favourite soundtracks.

There was a TV series in the 80's called Shaka Zulu, and the soundtrack was by David Polecutt. Awesome soundtrack.

One of the other composers I like (especially from 80's films) is David Foster.

Re: Film soundtracks. What do you like?

Watched The Social Network at the weekend and was blown away by the soundtrack... truly deserving of the Golden Globe and Oscar it won. A brilliantly ominous dark sound that was perfectly matched to the depiction of genius unfurling in the film.

Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and Bomb the Bass's Atticus Ross have come up with something special on this one, really made the film.

Thief (Tangerine Dream) is probably my fave soundtrack...John Williams of course...quite like the K-Pax soundtrack and some of the older John Carpenter efforts especially Precinct 13. Tron Legacy's track was good..pity the film was terrible!
