    Re: Recommend a book.

Supergods: Our World in the Age of the Superhero by Grant Morrison.

Its a history of comics from year dot, mixed in with some autobiographical stuff as well

The book has easily cost me a couple of hundred quid with all the other comics I`ve now bought off the back of reading it.

Also Its written by Grant morrison who is IMO the best comic book writer alive atm

Grapes of wrath - extremely moving, but reminds you of the unbreakable bonds of family.

    Re: Recommend a book.

i really enjoyed reading One Day. I had watched the movie before reading the book (big mistake as the movie was shockingly awful), and because so many people had raved about the book, and i found the movie so disappointing, I thought I would give it a go. I really thought it was well written - alot better than the actors that portrayed it, and the author deserves alot more credit

    Re: Recommend a book.

The Dark Tower Books, sorta cheating as its a 7 book series, but still a really good involved read. If you like gunslingers that travel into the future to riddle with large pink speed of sound trains (told ya it was weird stuff) then this is the books for you.

Stephen Kings wrote it, and its taken him over twenty years to write from memory

I was young when I read it and I guess it left a big impression! Read the first one around 86/87 and then carried on reading the next 12 books in the series as soon as each one was released.....over 14 years or so!

Everyone I have leant it to, has ended up reading the entire series as well.
i *knew* i recognised your name from somewhere!

i picked up the first of these totally by accident in an airport bookstore waiting for a flight. a few months later i'd read the lot. paused for 6 months then re-read them again. excellent books

i'd recommend neil gaiman's American Gods, but the Necroscope is a close second
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

My sister bought me Operation Mincemeat. Factual book about a cunning plan in WWII. Well worth a read if you like that sort of thing.

    Re: Recommend a book.

3 books I have read recently and enjoyed -

'Room by Emma Donoghue' Mother and her 5year old son, are held captive. This is written from the child's perspective.

'The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins' Only just got around to reading this, it had been on my list for quite a while, definitely worth reading.

'The Book Thief Markus Zusak' I loved this book, definitely recommend!

    Re: Recommend a book.

If you're reading The God Delusion then can I recommend The Reason for God by Tim Keller. Compare and contrast both the arguments they portray and the quality of the arguments themselves.

    Operation Mincemeat
I will second that book. That guy sure had a charmed life.

Reading Bomber boys at the moment and its an interesting contrast in how we go on about the Blitz. The german bombing campaign makes the blitz look like a paper cut. With one Senior RAF office saying "How will the germans ever forgive us" after seeing the recon photos of a bombed german city.

well I might well have chosen the latter 2 so will go get Room to read

best series "Lord Foul's Bane" - Stephen Donaldson cheating a bit as it's three trilogies so far...
However although it will upset many through some twists and turns, it was both gripping and totally engaging - ostensibly Fantasy - but really not much like Tolkien...

Best book either Carlos Ruiz Zafon "Shadow of the Wind" or Salman Rushdie "The Ground Beneath her Feet"

i could recommend the inheritance cycle if you like that kind of thing. it kept me entertained on holiday as i am into all that fantasy stuff with dragons and elves. perhaps the lord of the rings and the hobbit. but they can be quite the read as they havent been written in the clearest of ways.

Don't. It's hours of your life you'll wish you had back. Pretty awful, especially the later ones.
