    Your favourite TV series...

I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping lately, and after about 2/3AM, I get very very bored, so I was hoping that you guys here could recommend some TV series that I could go out and buy..

So.. What's your favourite? Or what do you recommend?

    Re: Your favourite TV series...

Babylon 5, fantastic SciFi with a great strory line running through the entire show.

Battlestar Galactica (modern one) . Similar to the above

The Wire. Probably the best modern crime series. Very gritty with hreat character development.

Inspector Morse. My fav of the UK police series.

There all pretty much must see shows, I hear very good things about Boardwalk Empire but I couldn't get into it.

Also, try Sherlock (the modern version, produced by BBC). Season 2 aired today.

Ha! I was literally about the recommend B5, as i am currently re-watching after perhaps a 5 year break, and am smitten again!
For me this was the first show that gripped me from one episode to the next, desperate to know what was going to happen - dont get me wrong, ive always been a huge Star Trek fan as well as genre stuff in general, but B5's story arc was much more like a brilliantly written set of books.

And then Battlestar Galactica (2003) did it again But (much) better production values, and quite brilliant lines and acting.

If you are buying, as opposed to watching Sky or something, i'd recommend something that has finished so that you can buy a complete box set for relatively cheap.

24 is addictive if you havent seen it, and each season is pretty much self-contained.

For something current, Game Of Thrones is about to start its second season soon. Think 'Lord of The Rings' environment but with a very adult theme.

If you like medical-type dramas, House and Nurse Jackie are both very enjoyable although very different.
House - much more focussed on the mystery, and watching how Dr House solves it - actually quite a lot like an Agatha Christie or something.
Nurse Jackie - happens to be set in a hospital, and yes every episode someone comes through the ER with something blood-related happening, however its actually about a drug-addicted woman who is caring, selfish, funny, clever and manipulative all at the same time who is messing up her life. Each episode is only 25 minutes too, so you can easily slip one in

    Re: Your favourite TV series...

Battlestar Galactica is definitely a recommendation I'd second, along with The Wire and Sons of Anarchy. Weeds is good too although I found it fell off the boil in the most recent couple of seasons.

There's a few that haven't been mentioned that are worth watching too -

The Shield - Written by the same chap as Sons of Anarchy (Kurt Sutter) it's great, gritty and at times fairly dark cop show set in L.A but with a twist.. watch the first episode until the end and you'll see what I mean. Easily one of my favourite T.V shows of all time.

Firefly - Only one season and it's not even full length but an awesome Sci-fi/Comedy show despite that.

Peep Show - Up to seven seasons now and still as uncomfortable and hilarious to watch as it was at the start.

Deadwood - HBO goes wild west. Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane make it worth the price of admission on their own. Although maybe not one to watch if harsh language makes you uncomfortable

The Sopranos - Old now but exceptional. The show that made HBO and there's a reason it spawned so many parodies and knock offs

The X-Files - Same as the Sopranos tbh, old now but still good although you may want to leave the later seasons alone, it does go downhill at the end imo.

I suppose there is only so much porn you can watch into the small hours eh!

How about The Inbetweeners. I would second Samcro (Sons of Anarchy) this show is brutal and well worth a watch. Game of thrones is another show worth watching but maybe start reading the books if you are bored at night.

B5 from me as well; I have the Complete Universe box and I still love going back to it. Fringe is good; well-scripted, excellent performances. I like Warehouse 13 a lot, but another SyFy show that I'd have a look at is Haven, which has been thoroughly excellent.

    Re: Your favourite TV series...

In my recently watched, and in no particular order:

    Sons of Anarchy*
    The Shield*
    Chuck
LOST (if you havent seen it... I didn't like the ending, but the journey was enjoyable)
    Weeds
    Fringe (most definately!)*
    Sons Of Guns
    American Gun
two and a half men (I've seen every episode, and although the new season with ashton kutcher just isnt the same, still fairly enjoyable).
    Flashpoint*
Theres also the "girly" stuff which I still find quite enjoyable:
    One Tree Hill
    Being Erica

lots to pick from...plenty of stuff on the net to find out what they are.

would start with the *'d programmes if you havent watched any

    Re: Your favourite TV series...

Battlestar Galactica (2003) most definitely, I have the blu ray boxset and keep going back to it to re watch.

    Lost
    Sons Of Anarchy
    Fringe
    Blue Bloods
    The Wire
Heroes (Season 1, don't bother with the rest.)
    Firefly
    Board Walk Empire
24 (up to Season 4 after that it starts to get repetitive)
    ER
