Why does the "Good/Cool guy" never study in movies?
I was just studying this evening....and this question came up, I asked on hexus IRC but since not many people are available there, couldnt really get a discussion kind of, but still, wanted to ask here.
In most, if not all, TV shows and Movies ive seen, regarding teens and college students etc, show the good/cool/protagonist guy as not needing any studying ...i mean, they never study, in every show/movie, the cool guy has to have a geek friend, who does all the mind work/studying...why is that so? Why cant cool college students study and be intelligent? Why do movies imply that good looking guys dont study and only geeky guys study? Plus doesnt that influence the young? In to thinking that bunking and not studying and skipping classes is cool and that studying is only for lame geeks? When i was in college, atleast not long ago, that was the major view, the guys who used to study, were never cool....always had geek group...a side table...and that is what we see on media...isnt that a bad thing?...what do you guys think? |

i've already explained this to you!
![]() it's because the geeks study and the cool people don't study 'cause that's a stereotype that everyone can understand. |

Whats more fun to watch....some "cool" guy studying...or some "cool" guy at a kegger?

Re: Why does the "Good/Cool guy" never study in movies?
I've always thought the definition of "cool" matures as you do.
In lower school, you had to play sports to be kool, because thats what I did. In upper school I thought that anyone who listened to the music I did and played in bands was kool, because thats what I did ![]() Some people think they need to smoke, drink .. do drugs to be cool. I don't think people that don't study are cool, lazy perhaps, not cool. So I think a clear definition of what is cool should be established before you can suggest who is in fact cool. If it's just having lots of friends.. then a lot of people are pretty cool without even knowing it lol |

Re: Why does the "Good/Cool guy" never study in movies?
i think even without the movies and TV programs doing this that this stereotype would still be present..
the cool/hard people will always bunk off school and leave with below average grades, which they'll be proud of.. but the people who actually care about their future will study and get HWK done on time.. so in turn they'll leave with grades they can be proud of and get a decent job when they're older.. i'd personally say i fit somewhere in the middle, i want to have a laugh and without wanting to appear big-headed or anything, i'd say i'm 1 of the 'cool' people at school, but i also get all my CSWK done on time and always revise for my tests.. so that kinda makes a geeky/cool sorta guy by that stereotype.. edit: and by cool, i mean, someone that gets along with everyone.. someone that doesn't act like a prat to impress people.. don't do drugs, do drink, but not often.. |

btw how did that australian art thing go matty..? get it done on time did'ya? thinking back to school, cool is a relatively modern concept - we just had lads that were tough, & messed about, & picked on the clever or swotty, but most people only hung out with them for the usual pack reasons; they were generally looked on as being the idiots they were. people might have laughed at stuff they did/said but it was that uneasy kind of laughter. mind you it wasn't the world's best school, so if there were such things as cool kids i suspect they were being it elsewhere. |

Re: Why does the "Good/Cool guy" never study in movies?
Since when did sitcoms/dramas have any bearing on reality?
College is there so you can get good A-levels. To get good A-levels you need to study. If you leave college without any qualifications, does that make you cool? If so, I'd rather not be cool thankyou. ![]() Besides, at my college, the cool kids are the only ones who think they're cool. Everyone else I know think they're annoying. |

just remembered a twist on this theme - anyone else laugh heartily at the casting director's idea of a 'nerdy' friend for Clare in Heroes...? yeah, right
