Sneak preview of a trance track i'm working on...

Far from finished and unmixed, but gives you a taster I guess. Comments good bad or indifferent welcome

    Thumbs up

sounding pretty good here however there were a few things i did notice but please dont think im being picky, if you tidy up what im about to say you could have the making of a good track.

    1. the bottom end is too deep, i cant quite tell but it sounds a bit like the bass is conflicting with the kick drum, try giving the kick drum a bit of compression and maybe turn the bassline up maybe a semi-tone?, and maybe EQ the kick to a slightly higher frequency, it sounds a bit too muddy (if you get me...)

    2. you could do with some claps when the percussion starts to come into play, i noticed that you had claps towards the end of the track but some of them were off beat, you need them on every second beat, also with the clap, its sound like your using quite a lot of delay, decrease this a little bit and also give the clap a little compression.

    3. on the break down maybe put some snares building up till the point of when the beat comes back in?,, say for about 16-32 beats gradually building up from silent. this gives the whole tune a bit more of a lively feel.

but overall im quite impressed, if you follow what ive just said you will find that the tune is more lively, clean, and seems of a faster pace than it actually is, one thing to always remember is not to make your bass and kick too deep, as this will make the track seem slower. when what you really want is something driving, that will make the people on the dance floor go WILD!, well thats my 2 cents anyway, keep up the good work.

All good points - as I say it's far from finished, this is just the basic layout of the track so far, got to add in the wind down at the end for mixing purposes. There's no mastering yet so levels are a bit out of place and yes the bass is a little muddy. I might pitch shift everything up half an octave to raise the bass out of the bass drum range. The clap isn't off beat, it's just got a cheeky reversed clap in there which throws your head a bit at first. I've got to work on the build ups a bit more and I'm considering changing the pad, it's not quite right somehow.. I'm aiming for a Planisphere kind of feel..

    Still, cheers for the comments

Minor update - finished the main layout of the track.

I've taken onboard what you've said and I've pitched the synths up - I have to say I was suprised, it does sound a hell of a lot more lively. Good call.

Haven't had much chance to alter anything else, bar a few levels here and there and I'm experimenting with a compression plug in, but it's getting there. Still haven't found a pad I like so I'll stay with what's there for the moment..

Hi it does sound a lot better than your original post, and as stated above, very much like agnelli and nelson, just out of interest what tools are you using to produce, software/hardware synths? i do like that pads and synths, very (trancey), just out of interest could you try putting a little more reverb on them and see what the result you get keep up the good work

Webspace has probably taken a battering.

I'm currently running without much reverb since my Powerbook is already taking a kicking from the 6-7 softsynths it's running for the track. I'm going to move it to the dual 2.7ghz G5 when mixing down the full track so it'll sound a lot more polished when finally mastered

As for the software/hardware? Just a G4 Powerbook running Cubase SX and a few softsynths which are secret

There's a few... I'm working on a remix of a friends track, though I've lost momentum with it for the moment and unless you've heard the original track it really doesn't have the same impact. I also helped out with the original, but sadly can't post it since it's a commercial track and is copywrited, sorry. I can however link you to the remix since it's work in progress and is 'unofficial'.

OK - am I on too many drugs or does this sound mind blowing?

Forget the levels and balance of the track a sec, I'm just playing with the sounds and thought I'd do something a bit off the wall. But... I kinda like it

Keep it and blend it in somewhere, write something else based around this sound or stay off the caffine Andrew?

Wow, thats pretty good, i'm liking how the song at certain points appears to bounce from left to the right, if that makes any sense. I'd like to see something developed out of this. Plus i'd really like a large amount of music from you to download I really like your style are you trying for a chillout theme? I find all of your music quite relaxing.

OK, final update now. Added the reverb and EQ. Gonna ask a friend to compress it and polish it since I don't have plugins for that - the standard compressors in SX3 are fine for individual instruments but are pretty poor for mastering sadly.

Still - here's the link. See if you can tell the difference.

sounding good lowe... have you tried reason 3? it would have all the plugins you would possibly need, including mastering.. only problem is that you cant record audio unless you rewire it to cubase... worth a shot i say
