Rockbox anyone?
Anyone here using Rockbox as firmware on there DAP then?
I eventually plumped for it on my iriver H140 at the beginning of the year, and it's a vast improvement on the stock iriver firmware (not that that was too bad, compared to some I've seen). The main reason for my post, was that I've only recently discoverd that hexus have a group on last.fm, so I thought I'd point out a rockbox patch to act as a plug-in and submit your listening habits while out and about. [edit]that's you're listening habits while out and about, obviously it only submits when hooked up with your PC[/edit] I've only been using it for the last few weeks, but it will probably make a big impact on my last.fm profile, as I do the bulk of my listening in the car. Anyway, there's no shortage of geeks on here, so has anyone else got experience of rockbox? Have any of you fellow last.fm-ers given this patch a spin? |

I've been considering giving Rockbox a try on my H140 for some time but have been generally discouraged by the fact that the website lists it as a work in progress. It all looks reasonably straightforward to install and use but I guess at the end of the day I'm a big coward and don't want to somehow destroy my player even though I'm fully confident in my ability to flash the device and install the software I always have these "what if" scenarios in my head of sudden power outages or corrupt files or something! What would you say are the best features of Rockbox Vs the H140 firmware?

The big plusses for me are
quick boot up time (~5s) Increased battery life (15-20 hours playing mainly 160kbps oggs) On the fly playlists Customisable when-playing screen gapless playback (not gap-remove like the iriver firmware) Plus loads of gimmicky bits that I only use every now and again like a doom emulator, gameboy emulator, bubbles, soduku games There is a V3 release imminent, which is meant to the formal release for H1xx, but it has been held up by (among other things) a power drain on the H3xx. It's unlikely to be too much different the current daily builds though. As far as destroying your player, the bootloader is the only bit that is flashed into memory, the rest of the OS just sits on the disk. |

I used it on my first Archos (the first rockbox project) and a completely brilliant thing it was too.
Shame it doesn't work on my current Archos AV380 - but if it's as good on other players as it was on my first Archos, then go for it! W. |
