    Amazon Fire TV

No thread on this yet that I can see.

I recently took out Prime cos im a student and its cheap. Im looking forward to the one day delivery but one of the perks was the Lovefilm/Amazon Instant Prime TV or whatever its called now. Whatever it is, its not Netflix, which is fair enough, its still decent.

Now however, Amazon are offering Amazon Fire TV, which appears to be an android box similar to Apple TV. It supports XBMC and Plex, which means it plays mkv files etc. They have it on offer for prime members, even trial members i believe, for £49 until monday.

I would like a media streamer that a non tech savvy person can use, my own setup is a little complex as you have to use about 4 remotes, switch between inputs on the Amp, then negotiate either windows 8.1 with xbmc or the popcorn hour menu, or xbox one menu...

which for me is fine, no issue with it at all, but for any guests to the house is a bit much. I've got a panasonic unit which wont stream mkv files, will play them just nicely from USB, but wont stream them. I could relocate the popcorn hour but its a pita to get things from shared folders over the network as it wont recognise domains, only workgroups. Tempted to get a chromecast and see how that goes, but was debating this.

Thoughts and Opinions, theres plenty being said about it on HDUK atm, but as always I'd like the Hexus think tank to offer opinions.

Its not a definite purchase by any means, its not a necessity, just another gadget for me to play with really, and I may just drop it regardless of how good people think it is, but its new tech, or at least a new brand and should be discussed

    Re: Amazon Fire TV

I don't think you can cast Amazon Prime Video via Chromecast, and unless you've got a Fire tablet/phone, there's no Android app for it either, although there is on iPhone.

Mind you, at £18, you could take a pop at Chromecast anyway, get AllCast and you can stream all your media.

The Fire TV option will allow you to stream from APV, but I've had Amazon Prime Video for a while now (through a Lovefilm subscription), and I don't use the streaming that much. To be honest, all of the decent stuff is only available on the PPV option, from what I've seen.

    Re: Amazon Fire TV

Hexus has hijacked my thread and stuck it on the front page, damn them (shakes fist*) that thread will probably see a lot more action than this one.

Chromecast seems to have gone back up in price, mate was having issues with his last night too, probably his dodgy broadband tho

tempted by this, but not buying it for the sake of buying it. reviews seem decent on the US side of things

    Re: Amazon Fire TV

I've been looking forward to getting one of these since it was announced months ago. My brother has Amazon prime, so I got it at the bargain £49 price. I love my Apple TV 2 with XBMC, but it struggles with HD quality due to the low memory. The Fire TV has 4x the memory, 3x the processing power and games. Plus a USB port so you can plug in an XBOX360 controller or play media from a 2.5" HDD. I'm really looking forward to 23rd Oct.
