Router a client of another router?

    Hi,
I've got a Netgear wireless/switch/router combi. I want to add another network segment and bridge them over wireless.

Has anyone tried adding another wireless router (was thinking of using another combi router as they're cheaper) as a client of the 1st router?

    So:

    Code:
    <-- internet <-- router 1
                             -- pc
                             -- pc2
                             -- pc3
                             ..........wireless ......... <-- router 2
                                                                  -- pc4
                                                                  -- pc5
    Cheers...

    Tom

I have a similar setup at home, not wireless llinked, but the principal is the same.

On my first ADSL modem/router, it is sending out a static IP address (not DHCP) to my second router (eg 10.0.1.2). The second router then sends out DHCP addresses to my computers, using the 192.168.x.x ranges.

The port forwarding for various applications works, although like a fool i turned off the hardware firewall on the secong thinking it would help (it actually also disabled all port forwarding rules etc, knackering the whole setup!).

None of my machines actually connect directly to my primary ADSL router, and the wireless on that is turned off, so only the second (MIMO) router sends out wireless, but in theory it could.

In order to look at the routers, bear in mind they have a different address depending on the direction you are coming from, so the one closest to my PC i log in to on 192.168.0.1. This router has a different 10.0.x.x address from the other side.

Took my a while to understand it all but then i'm no network specialist

System as shown, plus: Akasa 965 HSF. Griffin Powermate that pulsates blue! Solid oak computer desk.
Diamondback Razor. Logitech media keyboard. Netgear MP115. AC-S1 R2 on the 3870. Netgear DG834N router.
Creative I-Trigue 3450 driven by an Audigy 2. External 160GB and 500GB hard drives. 1 happy me. 1 not so happy me's wife.

Yeah, I understand all the routing and how it is supposed to work. I even know how to set it all up if it's wired.

I'm just not sure that the 2nd router will act as a wireless client to the 1st one.

You can't use the inbuilt wireless in the second router to connect to the wireless from the first. So you'd need an accesspoint to connect to that, then the router to distribute that connection.

Well presumably an access point has one IP address which it uses to bridge the wireless/wired?

I could just attach the access point to the uplink of a switch and use that + static routing to do the same thing?

    Yup, that would work.

Well I just wandered down to Staples and managed to get a Belkin 802.11g access point/router/range extender for 30 quid, so I'll give it a go and report back!!!
