Setting up router with virgin broadband

Hi today I bought a zyxel router to use on my laptop and pc but am having trouble setting it up. Ive followed the intructions and I am almost certain it is connected correct but it still wont let me connect to the internet, the laptop knows its there and lets me set up the connection but when I click to see what type of connection it is it says 'local only'. I clicked on the button to try and auto fix it and it came up that windows could not fix the problem automatically. I really dont know what is going wrong. I am using a Dell laptop with windows vista, on virgin boradband with a scientific atlanta 2100 modem and the modle umber of my router is zyxel NBG334WUK01. I know the router is very cheap but it should let me onto the internet even if it has a very weak signal. Anybody got any ideas what Im doing wrong???

can you get it running in wired mode?
I would get it running that way first & then enable the wireless side.

yep i can get to the steup page but to be honest im not sure if im doing that right, i type in the ip address its told me to then follow the instructions, half way through it even scans and 'automatically' sets up my internet connection which just doesnt work. It is all wired at the moment it doesnt even work like that thats whats bugging me, my connection is usually fine then when i try it with the router i get nowhere.

ok problem is the modem and virgin. As it stands it still thinks its connected via your laptop...and the mac address of the laptop. What you have to do is turn off the router and the modem completely for at least 2 mins. Then plug in the router first and let it full boot up and work. Then plug the modem in. Give it a good 30 seconds to load up during which time it should talk to the router and then tell virgin to update which MAC address to use for the device using the internet...then it should work fine

The Mac adress to use will be the Mac Address of the Cable Modem, which never changes.

Do you have the silver NTL:Home Modem?
If so, type 192.168.100.1 into a browser window. If you can get to a validation window, it means you're attempting to connect to the Modem Configuration Pane, ergo, you can get online.

I'd say switch everything off, then turn it back on from the Co-ax to the PC.
    So,
Modem first: wait for the 4 green lights PWR, Ethernet, Sys and Rdy.
Router 2nd: Make sure the WAN light is switched on and give it 30 seconds or so.
Computer 3rd: Make sure that you're using DHCP and not statically assigning an IP in the TCP/IP properties of the LAN Connection. From the command line, use ipconfig /all to source your gateway and subnet. Subnet should be set to 255.255.255.0, and gateway is usually something like 192.168.1.1. Try to connect to the Modem Config page again.

Im talking of the MAC address that the cable modem connects to. A couple of years ago, ntl and telewest required that you register the MAC address of the device used to access the internet, either the router mac address or ethernet card in a pc. They have since got rid of that requirement but the mac address that accesses the net must match up with the one they have on the servers at their end. If it doesn't it won't work until it is reset by removing power from the modem for a while and allowing it to fully reset.

The only MAC address that VM will see is the SACM/STB (& only the registered MAC address on their system for the modem will work - I've got 2 [old & upgrade for 20Mb] & you can't just swap them).
They never see the MAC for your PC's (or router's) connection.

Re: Setting up router with virgin boradband

I had the same problem with mine when I set it up. My linksys router has an option to clone the mac address. With this it worked immediately. See if your router has the same option.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.
