    Network Problem

    Hi

    I am having a little dilemma.

    I have two computers, one latop and pc.

    The latop has xp and the pc vista.

    What i want to do is to connect the two together so i can share files between them.

    I have a bethere router, i think it is the speedtouch 780.

    Now i wonder if it would be possible to connect the two if one connects to the router via ethernet and the other via wireless.

    I have tried the wizard on both xp and vista but i am a little confused.

    help me !!!

    thanks in advance

    Yes.

    You need to enable file sharing on both computers, and you may need to change some of the firewall settings.

    I'm not familiar with your router, but some only allow a PC that connects wirelessly to connect to the internet, not to other computers on the Lan, (some Drayteks have that facility, although it is usiually disabled by default) so you may need to check that.

    But yes, what you are want to do is possible.

    Is YOUR system up to Folding?

    There are 10 types of people who understand binary - those that do... and those that don't.

    Actually I have run into problems with speedtouch routers in regards to accessing shares on machines sitting on opposite sides of wired, and wireless networks. This must have been 2 years ago and the router in question was the speedtouch 585 if memory serves. It was a known fault at the time and I ended up replacing my router with a netgear.

    1) browse the XP machine via IP rather than name;
    2) try to browse: \\xp machine\c$
    3) As already mentioned, is File and Print sharing enabled on XP;
    4) If using XP built in firewall is FP sharing exception enabled? If using some other sort of firewall, i.e., internet security software, is FP sharing enabled?
    5) try: net use <letter>: \\xp machine\c$ /user:xp machine name or IP\username password - see whether a drive is mapped on vista machine

    hope this helps
