Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Over the last 12 months I have had to drop my connection dow to 2Mb as this is the only sustained speed they seem to be able to offer but even then they are simply not able to keep my pings low enough at peek times.
Every saturday night I end up with this crap, they told me 8 months ago that it was oversubscription... god help us, they are bumping the 4Mbs to 10Mbs this month with no work on the local exchange.
ping www.bbc.co.uk -t

For CS:S it makes it just unplayable, I have complained and now I give up. VM can stick their connection.

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
That sucks, so far from bbc ping i get 12-14ms. Virgin support is pathetic and they shouldnt be over subscribing areas, gov should actually look at the problem instead of turning a blind eye. Id say ditch them because i bet others could give you lower pings unless you move to my house with this cool 12ms :P from virgin.
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
think is though Jay, your ping results aren't bad at all. not sure how those results support your argument that Virgin are crap & you can't play CS:S
it's slightly out of the norm but from that i wouldn't of said there was a problem. perhaps it's something on your end that is the problem
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
i get mid 40's early 50's with virgin media, so could be worse. When asked VM put it down to the same thing, over subscription.

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
I guess this is why they're so keen to cap occasional heavy users like me down to 80kbps.. they want me to jump ship. Though I'm not ubr08.

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
On Virgin Media and getting average ping of 18ms to bbc.co.uk and no packet loss 8pm Saturday. Looks like it's a bit hit and miss on what area you live in.
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Again.. not sure what your problem is.. im on ADSL, sync about 7.5mbit and never see pings below 50.
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Neo, the problem is oversubd area then added the 4mb to 10mb upgrade. Its bad.. anyway any 20 days till I am on Sky ADSL.

So, after them saying all about these speed tests sites not being right etc etc I thought I would ping their internl FTP server. This would prove that VM are right and that any issues anyone ever has is outside of their network!

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Local access network problem mate.... Have you got the results of a docsis ping? As that looks like noise ingress / poor rf setup to me.
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
the levels are good
Frequency 331000000 Hz
LockedSignal to Noise Ratio 37
dBPower Level -2 dB
Channel ID 3
Frequency 23000000 Hz
RangedPower Level 41 dBmV
as for docsis ping I am not sure what switches to use on the cmd line to give the result you want.
I have been told that they will be sorting the issue in my area on the 14th of November... I have had this issue for 4 months.

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
I am 1.9 kilometres from my exchange (usnig the AA Route finder and both postcodes)
What will my ADSL speeds be like i wonder?
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Not bad but not great.
I'm getting 2.5mb about 4km as the crow flies from the exchange.
Bit of a contrast to home where I'm 500m from the exchange and get a solid 8mb.

Read through the thread, you're a similiar distance from the exchange like dan so you might get speeds that I predicted there. I don't think you can get such a bad line that you will get less speed than you get on VM (assuming by your my system you are on 2mb)
How much are you paying for your internet right now?

I'm paying £18 for mine to achieve 16mb speeds and the 1.3mb upload so if your distance from the exchange is what you've said you can expect to get 14mb-15mb (lower than the sync but thats because of throughput). Then you can choose to get fastpath which will increase your speeds a bit and if you get a Netgear DG834GT or N version you can use custom firmware and change the SNR to increase the speed even more at the cost of stability (the line will resync but on the netgear it does it quite fast you don't notice it. Mine syncs once a day maybe or sometimes it stays synced longer, it all depends on the weather). If you don't actually like the speeds or are getting crap speeds (hope not :() then you can just request to cancel but you have to wait 3 months so if you instantly get it and you don't like it you're stuck until the 3 months after you request cancellation (£54) or you can pay an express charge (£40), this is only available on the 24MB packages but the Value packages you're tied in a 12 month contract then after the 12 months you can cancel with 1 months notice. However I'm not sure if it works but I don't see why not, you can submit a ticket to get upgraded to the 24MB service, then choose to cancel which would cost less than cancelling on the Value package.
Do let us know if you switch

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
I know I am... I am leaving next month anyway. I really really think VM are up there with AOL. Its almost unusable at times.
for a laugh I called their "tech support"
"oh, I see its an issue on our end, yes, it will be fixed by tomorrow morning, re try your pings first thing and they will be much better!"
I just put the phone down.

Shoulda gone O2! What about pings and tracerts to www.jolt.co.uk
At least you got less hops to get to hexus than me :)

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Well this is just a total nightmare!!!!
I ordered the package and added it to our sky account. the account is in my girlfriends name but the Direct Debt payment is made by myself in my name.
1. I called sky up to cancel and request a MAC code, they argue with me that I can't and have to pay, I inform them its my right to be able to do this in the first 8 days and then have to point them to their own website. After 10 mins of being on hold they forward me onto a dead line.
2. I call again, go through and ask to cancel, they say ok and cancel it but say they can't get my MAC code. The girl said she would pass me onto some one who can and sends me back to customer services who say I have to go back to cancellations. He then forwards me onto a dead line again.
3. I call up again. I get through to some one and she asks me a few questions then asks if my g/f is able to come to the phone. I say no and they she says I can't do anything due to data protection. I inform her that if she looks at the bill payer it will be my name, I can also answer any questions she asks including the account password. She says sorry we can't... I put the phone down at this point in a rage.
4. I call again, get through to the cancellations team (again) some one picks up and says “hi” I say “I would like to cancel my broadband” he says “ok hold on“, puts me through to a sky internal menu system that puts me back to the queue system again. I finally get back through to the cancellation team and say in my deepest voice, yes my title is Miss and they finally offer to send my MAC code via a Text message.
over an hour of messing about and I bet i'll be phoning again! I have no doubt that MAC code will not arrive.
I have signed up to O2 16Mb and will be moving to them as soon as my MAC arrives.

Don't forget the £20 quidco!
Fingers crossed this sorts it out for you.
My pings with hexus have increased to the same as with Skys (previously pinged it and got 30's) but my Jolt pings are still 14ms. I've switched to O2 as well so if you do get bad results it's gonna be real bad luck as you might have a bad line or be on a bad exchange. :(
I dunno why my pings to hexus are at your Sky BB levels, but my jolt ones have stayed the same and for gaming thats good for me :) (Maybe if you retry on VM, it could be higher then it can be put down to a higher load on hexus' servers)
All the best!

Oh that's alright, considering I'm on the £7.50 8MBps O2 package getting 14ms on BBC is still good. Mind you I'm doing it on wireless too, maybe I'll get lower ones on ethernet.
When you start beating the 7ms I had on Be then you'll be in the lead :heckle:

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
so my MAC code arrived but it looks like sky have totally removed broadband from the line so I now have to wait upto 3 months for them to release the line and for BT to reactivate the line.
I called sky and blasted them but they insist that its normal! MAC codes are supposed to mean you get no drop in service but oh no, sky totally removed broadband from my line.
I honestly can see why the internet in this country is in a sorry state.

I have had over 1Mb/s upload from this. My profile says 13Mb / 1.3Mb so speed test is about correct.
Pings are consistant and quite low

As you can see above the cable pings where lower at times but are all over the place with 18ms between the highest and lowest pings. This is no good for CS:S or any other online FPS, infact todays Virgin Media pings are the best I have had in years! (typical) Looking at the 02 pings you can see they are not always as low as Virgin Media but they are rock solid with only 2ms between the highest and lowest pings.
£18.50 a month for 2Mb / 0.2Mb Virgin Media that caps after you have looked at a large youtube video or £10 a month for 13Mb / 1.3Mb 02 that you can use until the end of time?
Hmmm. Tough one.

Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
Good to see those speeds Jay.
How about pings to bbc or jolt.
If you were on fastpath on Be I'd say you'd be getting 13-14mb :)
Remember if you're using a DG834GT or N router you can get custom firmware and increase the speed by changing the SNR or do that with the DMT tool on the standard box ;)
PS - It'll make a nice change to not see you in a bad mood or moaning about VM anymore :P

I hated the fact that they where so inconsistant in every way. I am REALLY picky about my internet! :D
Do you think its worth asking for fastpath? (remove interleaving)

Well you can't really get fastpath on O2 BB iirc, but on Be* you can if you're on the top two speeds. It'll only decrease your pings to it's lowest and add a few meg. I have the near same attenuation as you (28 down) and with the DG834GT I can tweak the SNR to make the line achieve 16mb/s and hold the line steady longer than the BeBox or O2 Box. If you really want those lower pings (hardcore gamer) or want 3-4mb more speed and possibly a higher upload then try switching to Be* if possible and if the extra £8 (assuming you're paying £10 for your current 16mb) is worth it. Pings still looking good, can't say that for mine as I'm on wireless :D
-
Re: Is anyone else on ubr08 Virgin Media?
I do know that some people on O2 have interleaving turned off (be call this fastpath)

Ooh I had read this was not possible hence why it was cheaper than Be*'s service. I'll go check again to see if it can be. If it can then you should turn it off (or turn on fastpath, confusing eh :D) if your line is stable :)
