That we have any tame BT engineers on the forums do we?
I wouldn't mind getting some honest answers to a few things re my adsl/phone line without getting fobbed off by the call centre staff/script reading monkeys...

There's been a few new estates built around us, and where the line length used to be around 3km to the exchange, now it's nearly 6, so they've obviously de-toured to pick up these new housing areas and mullered my broadband (and phone line) at the same time..
Loads of static, and frequently the caller can't be clearly heard, sometimes our end doesn't even ring..
Oddly enough after a call was made to BT (and they insisted nothing was wrong with the line), the line noise dropped off dramatically, but it's creeping back in again now..
Bloody lying barstewards..

A 6KM line! Jesus that's just stupid! That needs to be sorted.

I doubt if anyone WAS a BT engineer they would own up.
I am currently fighting an issue just like this on my office lines.
Loads of static on the line. I make a call to BT and they tell me nothing is wrong. Literally 30 minutes later the line is perfect.
This lasts a month or so before it starts getting worse again.
2009, if it carries on that long, will be the 3rd year of this crap.
I've noticed this more and more as well.
Either people are ringing up here and eating crisps while they are talking, or something amiss is happening as more and more callers now are getting to the point they are nearly inaudiable over the noise on their lines.
How long does copper wiring last for and does it degrade over time as I'm sure more and more lines are loosing their quality over time. If this is the case, are BT holding back for 21CN before they replace the dodgy wiring ?
The copper itself doesn't degrade, but the insulation between the copper cores, as well as the out covering of the cable will.
Once the outer cover is damaged, moisture can easily penetrate into the cable. Old cables used paper as the insulator between the individual copper pairs, obviously this doesn't respond well to water.
