    Network Setup Question

I have a minor problem, so need your help guys.

I have just bought a WD World Book NAS drive.

I want to be able to access the nas (even if pc is off) and my pc using RDP from anywhere in the world via a net connection.

My current connection is ADSL - TalkTalk, so I know the IP is not static.

How do i go about this setup?

    Thanks!

Do you mean you want to be able to access the PC when it is turned off?

    Re: Network Setup Question

Assuming you have a router already, just attach the NAS to that - you wont need your PC on then.

To access it from anywhere in the world on a dynamic IP, you'll need a service like no-ip.com

sorry what i meant, was that i want to be able to access my pc via rdp or the nas drive, but dont want to be restricted to just one of them - if you understand?

i thought that if the ip address is set then i would only be able to access the one thing.

    i want to be able to do something like;

245.245.67.89 accesses nas which is internally 192.168.2.1

but how would i use the same ip to then access my pc which is internally 192.168.2.2

    this is the dilemma.

    help?

    Re: Network Setup Question

You can either set up a VPN into the router (so that your remote PC anywhere in the world appears to be on your local internal network) or you can set up port forwarding on the router so (for example) you SSH into the NAS box (if it supports SSH - I haven't used the WD device, but if the underlying OS is Linux based, as most are, it probably will) and use another port for RDP. (I don't use windows RDP - I don't know what the port number is). SSH would give you command line access to the files on the NAS.

This is very general advice, please come back if you need more specifics, although a lot will depend on the gear you have and its specific capabilities.

    Re: Network Setup Question

RDP uses a different port to your NAS

    so...

    your internal ips are

    192.168.10.10 - PC
    192.168.10.11 - NAS

    your external IP is 123.123.123.123

to get to RDP you would forward port 3389 (TCP) to 192.168.10.10

To get to your NAS you would forward port 80 (assuming it has a web based interface) to 192.168.10.11

this means that externally your PC would be 123.123.123.123:3389 and your NAS would be 123.123.123.123:80
