    tcp/ip error

On a friends computer after reinstalling Winxp im trying to reconnect to the internet using the internet providers disc.
During the installation i get the message tcp/ip error ive down loaded all the motherboard drivers and still get the same message.
Ive run the network diagnosticsprogram in windows help.
Itreads outbound mail server failed, unable to connect to smtp port 25.
Any help with this problem would be appreciated jhad.

    Re: tcp/ip error

Im using the blueyonder installation disc during the installation it checks the computer for compatability then starts to test the connection when it comes up with the tcp/ip error.
So i run the network diagnostic in WINXP help and it gives me the failed message.
Outboundmailserver failed, unable to connect to smtp port 25
    Thanks for any help jhad

    Re: tcp/ip error

Is the PC connecting through a modem or a router?

If it is a router it will need to have a network card, are the drivers for it installed?

I know you said the motherboard drivers were installed, but the network hardware is usually separate from the main chipset drivers.

    Re: tcp/ip error

I changed the motherboard on this computer connected the router to on board ethernet connection because of the problem i added a network adaptor and loaded the drivers but still get the same message.
Ive no problems getting on line with a wireless adaptor but for some reason the computr owner wants to connect through the network adaptor.
    Thanks again jhad

    Re: tcp/ip error

with the PC switched on have you tried turning off the router and turning it back on again?

i had a similair 'cant find IP or router' problem with a friends XP machine, and this cured it. it might work with your one, it might not, but its the simplest thing to check.

    Re: tcp/ip error

Are you getting any wired internet connect? You mentioned being unable to connect to the mailserver - can you connect to anything using a web browser (IE or Firefox etc)

    If not....

Open a command line window and type in ipconfig and post back the result.

Have you configured networking correctly in the control panel networking section? In particular ensure that it is set up to get the networking details via DCHP.

    Re: tcp/ip error

As Blueyonder has been dropped for Virginmedia i assume that would give a problem ?

Last time i saw a Blueyonder Install disk was like 7 years ago and that was for people still using Dialup modems.

    Re: tcp/ip error

Ive used the blueyonder disc several times since they were taken over by Virgin media and it reinstalled in the past.
Ive typed in ipconfig in the command window how do i copy in and paste it in this forum.
Ive clicked select all but when i right click it, it deselects and doesn't allow me to copy it.
    Thanks again jhad

    Re: tcp/ip error

What are you using the install disk for is it Dialup modem drivers or USB driver for the older cable modems instead of Lan Cable. ?

    Re: tcp/ip error

Its not a dial up modem its a morola router, ive changed the motherboard in the computer reinstalled WINXP and the disc im using is to reinstal the connection drivers and software.
During the installation it runs a test on thecomputer to see if everything is compatible which it passes.
It then goes on to configure the connection then i get the TCP?IP error it tells me to turn off firewall and try again.
Iturn off the firewall but still get the problem ive noticed when i go to control panel /network adaptors the icon that shows the connection in control panel does say ( connected firewalled ) this is with the firewall turned off.
    Thanks again jhad

    Re: tcp/ip error

Sorry dude i can't help as the last time i used the motorola modem with blueyonder was years ago with the 10mb connection and i can't remember ever having to use the install disk.

Most people with old Blueyonder questions now ask at the VirginMedia web forum so that might be your best bet
