Are there any programs (perhaps free ones?) for testing a wifi signal? - For working out the best location to place a router... Or do professionals just walk around with a laptop, looking at the 5 bars of signal strength?

Sure buy a HTC Desire and download WiFi Analyzer :p
Try inssider: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider
I agree with watercooled
Inssider is a great tool, used it quite a bit at work to find areas of dodgy reception.
I have actually got this and was playing with it in a real-world situation a few days ago :) I just wondered if there was anything more detailed out there...
It's much more user-friendly than NetStumbler that I've had a play with before... And seeing metageek reminded me that I'd seen wi-spy before and that was the kind of thing I was looking for :D ...But at it's price, I'll stick to the free software unless I find a need/job to fund it :)
Thabks for that software recomendation, just used inSSIDer to sort a problem with the inlaws wifi.
