Media Streaming wont turn on- Windows 7

    Hi all,

    I have 2 laptops running Win 7.
    My Acer is running Win7 64bit & Toshiba running Win7 32bit

Trying to set up a home group betwen 2 laptops. Acer is fine but when I try to enter the password into the toshiba if fails. I also cant turn on media streaming on the Toshiba. When I go into Nwtwork & Sharing Centre and try to turn on Media Sharing nothing happens. Tried turning off UAC but that does nto help.
    Any Ideas

Have a look into your services, (start --> type services) there are fairly good descriptions next to each one. Could be that a required service you need isnt running. A quick look through the services list I've found:

    Peer Network Grouping
    Peer Networking Identity Manager

Both state they support homegroup functionality.

If both are showing status as stopped/ blank could well be one of the causes of your problem, right click each one in turn and click start

Have you gone through the troubleshooter that windows offers you when the HG setup fails? The home group options are very picky about network setup and time syncs.

cant see anything different on either laptop. Tos laptop can see my shared folders and stream music from my hdd but if I try to connect Acer laptop to Tos mt laptop claims there is a problem with the Tos on the network

You must run the software as administrator

    That's it!

Re: Media Streaming wont turn on- Windows 7

I had this exact problem as well but I found out how to fix it on my pc so here's my solution. Hope it works for everyone else.

My initial problem was that my xbox couldn't stream content from my Win7 pc. Windows media center streaming worked however so I knew it was something wrong with Windows Media Player. After lots of searching I found out that if I created a new User the streaming worked fine. I used process of elimination to determine there is a set of files that need to be deleted in order to fix the problem. Here's what to do:

    1) open services.msc and Disable "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service"

    2) Go to the following hidden folder:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player (where <user> is the the account you're logged in as)

    3) Delete all the contents of this folder

    4) Open Windows Media Player 12 and head to Stream -> Turn on Media Streaming

    It should work now.

So in short my problem had something to do with some application files that existed within Media Player itself. Hope this fix works for others too.
