    Broadband speed and snr issues

Last month I upgraded my broadband package to 20megs and used a router Netgear DG834 v4. I was getting 19.5 megs but during the evenings I suffered drop outs due to snr levels reaching zero. My provider changed the target snr to 12 which resulted in speed of 13megs. The connection became reliable when I bought a new router called technicolor TG582n.

Yesterday, I tested my speed and was surprised to see the speed at 19.5 megs and just wondering whether anyone else had a similar experience?

Re: Broadband speed and snr issues

back when i used to use the farce that was BT internet, it was common to find the speed creeping up over a period of time following a complaint. They claimed it was because of a process where they increment it up from a stable point until it stops being stable. In my experience this meant I'd ring up because it would give me jack-all speed. Then they would tinker. The speed would go even lower. After a week of next-to-no-use whatsoever it would eventually reach jack-all again and me and Sanjeev (literally his name) in their technical office overseas would have a lengthy chat through his mandatory 10 helpful steps all over again. So glad I'm not with BT anymore.

I guess it's possible that using a new router reset the target SNR margin at the exchange. Perhaps someone technical can confirm...

Thankfully Zen, my internet provider, had raised a fault with BT over the drop outs in May. After five Engineer visits, it was then discovered that a pair change on the E-side was needed at the local cabinet and now I have a rock solid connection.

    lo dude

I was about to jump on this thread as being a Thread-Necro, but it's your thread! And I'm glad Zen sorted you. Many years ago they did exactly the same for me. They don't give up and they believe you when you've got a problem and do look into it.

I'd add to this: I had ADSL 2 with Zen, having moved from ADSL Max, and I STILL had the odd drop out IF I rebooted my router. If it reset itself after power cuts etc, I'd have a wobbly connection until it had re synced a few times and all drop outs happened early evening. The SNR ratio improved every sync as the speed cut itself a little at a time.

However... having stayed with Zen but moved to Fibre (Zen's version of Infinity) it is proper rock solid.. and fast enough to make your eyes bleed.

I had a similar problem with my FTTC connection, a problem port in the cabinet. It needed a bit of badgering for Zen to escalate to BT, but once BT get involved, my speed doubled!
