    Networking RJ45/HomePlug to Sky Box...help a dunce!

    Help a dunce!

Here's my problem, today I have signed up to Sky for TV. I am getting multiroom fitted and keeping the VM internet and phone (I don't ever use the phone but I need one for the Sky boxes and for a bundle deal).

I have just found out I need a phone line to each box. Dammit. I have just decorated the house, so running a phone extension cable through the house is a no no. I need to go wireless as much as possible.

So I am going to get a home plug setup for the office where the router is, one for the lounge where the HD+ box will go and then a third for the box in the bedroom.

Problem is I need Internet for the on demand, but I also need a phone line plugged into both boxes (apparently)

I need to know if this plan will work...

In the lounge I have the phone port and will use a home plug for the RJ45 to the box.

In the office I will use the home plug to connect to the wireless router through an RJ45 cable.

In the bedroom I will have a home plug, into which will be plugged:

    An RJ45 splitter: http://www.maplin.co.uk/rj45-double-adaptors-22423

One of the RJ45 slots will have this fitted: http://www.maplin.co.uk/bt-to-rj45-adaptors-22940

The other port will have an RJ45 into the box for on demand.

Would this work? Anyone got an easier solution to this problem? I can't believe Sky still need a phone line in each box! (the engineer isn't fitting a phone line as we're keeping the VM one, so I can't get him to fit an extension

    Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Unfortunately multiroom is the one service that does require a phone line as thats how they checked you've not sold/given the box & card to another address.

Cheaper solution is what I did......

Get a long telephone extension cable (Sky engineer will make you one as part of the install if you ask him).....plug it in and set the box up and use it.

Unplug and put it away until sky prompts you that you haven't got it plugged in....then plug it in for 5 mins and then put the cable away for a few months again

I guess you could just plug it in every month or 2 and not even have sky hassle you.

Re: Networking RJ45/HomePlug to Sky Box...help a dunce!

Using that adapter isn't going to work.

Home plugs are "smart" in that they actually do something with the IP data coming into them. What you are trying to do is like pluggin a phone line into the ethernet port of a pair of Wifi access points and expecting to share the phone line over that. Not going to happen.

There must be a way to use the DECT wireless system to extend your physical phone line to do waht you want.

edit well, that was easy. http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=dect+wirele...+line+extender

You see, I am hoping this is possible. Do Sky warn you when it hasn't been able to connect? The support people seem to imply it must always be connected, but given I don't want any on demand charges then I really don't need the line at all

Yeah, thats the same thing I posted in post two...

But its becoming an expensive solution to a stupid problem as I already need to get a pair of home plugs for on demand

Yeah I did it for years. You get a letter telling you to plug it in.....if you don't you get a phone-call. Lots of warnings and friendly prompts before they get serious. And this whole process only gets triggered if the box hasn't phoned home for a few months.

Re: Networking RJ45/HomePlug to Sky Box...help a dunce!

so if you just plug it in for an hour every month or so theres no issue?

loads of people telling me they dont have their boxes plugged into phone lines, but Sky are saying the engineer wont install it with no phone line there. I dont mind getting the DECT plugs, but that more energy cost for something it only needs once a month or so...

Im not having a phone line fitted for Sky, instead im keeping the VM line (as their broadband is too good round me to lose) - he has to drill in and fit the cable for the satellite box, I wonder if he might also fit an external extension at the same time...hmmm

Re: Networking RJ45/HomePlug to Sky Box...help a dunce!

I was trying to find a wireless repeater with wired RJ45 connections too, but can't seem to find anything that offers up RJ45 connections which utilise the wifi relay....

Otherwise Ill have to go down the route of plug sockets...

Just run a cable around the edge of your room to where the box will be. "Yeah mate, I'm going to tack it to the skirting board when I get a second".

The actual people who install it won't give 2 hoots.

Need to get me a 25m extension lead then

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...pf_rd_i=468294

If I read that right I can extend my TP Link 1043 router to this netgear box and then hardwire my TV/Sky HD+, Blu Ray right?

Im thinking its less power consumption than the powerline setups - thoughts?
