A bit of groveling goes a long long way...

Am looking at a new house with Sair , and we NEED Broadband. It's not an option, its the law. Saw a nice house yesterday, and Zakky's first question was "Phat pipe ?"

Now he didn't know. I currently have NTL because my current housing estate has aluminium cable and not copper. BUT my house showed on the www.getadsl.co.uk website as compatible. Wasn't until the BT dude showed that I was told the bad news.

HENCE I am overly cautious and needed to finds a way of 100% confirming that I could get ADSL at this new house, as NTL aint been to dig up the roads there.

Most ISP's want you to sign up and order, and the phone must be in your name before you can do that. And lets make this 100% clear, Zakky will NOT sign up to ADSL on someone esles house, without knowing he is gonna own the house.

    Catch 22

The bloke who owns the house was happy to have as BT engineer visit, and I took his telephone number. CHecked it and it sohwed as being in a 512, 1mb and 2mb area, so my hopes were raised way higher. My house only showed as a 512, and so does Sair's house even today, and that is 300 metres from mine.

SO I rang BT, and waited 25 minutes on hold, but got through. I explained and I begged. I must be good at begging. The lady I spoke too finally realised I was not a nutter and was deadly serious. But I pleaded and she eventually gave in.

So I am not gonna drop her in the cack, and she DID NOT tell me much, but I DID ask her if she would mind checking all the BT accounts in the same road, juat is case one of them was already on a BT Broadband deal. And fair play, she checked. Every one. I was so so gratefull I musta sounded like a right brown noser, but eventually I had no choice but to say "If I was to walk up the road in question and knock on every door and ask 'Excuse me, do you have broadband?' what would be the best doors to try?"

"Well Sir, I'd try number 2 first, and if they really wanted they could upgrade to a 1 meg from the one they might already have"

So, while it might have been a bit nuaghty of her, I would like to say this

BT I CURRENTLY LOVE YOU BECAUSE OF ONE MEMBER OF STAFF WHO WENT THE EXTRA MILE for a POTENTIAL CUSTOMER, someone who isn't even on the books yet

    Mrs X, I salute you

New House is one step closer

    Very neat

I had similar problem trying to rent a flat last month. Its even worse if your only renting . Of course the agents dont know the first thing, not even the phone number of the place

Still I managed to check some numbers on the street and they are ADSL enabled so I'll just have to cross my fingers.

    You cheeky git!

So she didn't actually tell you directly, I love it!

If cars had followed the same developmental path as computers, a Rolls Royce would cost £60, get a million miles per gallon and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

don't think she could. I dont even live on the street let alone own anyones house! But she realised it was important and no harm can come from it. I knew a phone number from that road, and she helped from there

    She's todays heroin

methinks flash will be getting many pm's! luckily me got shiny cable modem... I think you're right though. It's surprising in that way - when I ordered cable, I said that I wouldn't be taking my current flat unless I could get 1mb broadband and lotsa channels - nice lady at telewest took the house number - said yes, no problem - and would you like to pre-choose your home phone number!
Didn't even bother calling BT after that!

buggeroo - that's not nice - just happened to a friend of mine as well. I still don't get that - I presume it's the type of cable they've got, or is it that they've just not run the right fibre to the junction box?

Havent a clue, the TV tuner is analogue and the picture quality is ARSE. Rumours of a possible upgrade but they have been saying that for ages, parents are going back to BT and freeview. This is in the South East most populated bit of UK. Cable company is telewest broadband, thats the funny bit.

I didn't realise tw still hadn't killed off their analogue connections -
I'd write a letter and ask - that way it has to be processed... that's really not good. in my old flat, I got my upgrade to digital by getting everyone who had analogue on my street to write and complain. it took a fair amount of talking - but all my neighbours eventually complied with my demands!

NTL still dont offer broad band in all houses either

I have it and LOVE IT

    just for note....cos I;m moving soon, I downgraded to 750 from 1meg...

    huge difference....

its the upload that now sucks....128 instead of 256.....so ADSL will sort that.
