I think 5.5km is the outer limit for ADSL - but of course if you have a line equivalent of a piece of wet string between yourself and the shiny ADSL enabled exchange it may all be a bit academic

I thought it was 3.8k's. But then again, I could be wrong.

I think it is 3.5k for max speed :

"Rate Adaption is enabled on all DSL connections. This provides line restrictions of 5.5km, 55dB and 275nF. Customers that are close to, or over, old limitations of 3.5km, 41dB, 200nF and up to 5.5Km may experience lower 'upstream' speeds which will typically range from 64Kbps to 256Kbps depending on line traffic and distance from the local exchange. From an article in IT Week:

"Reach-Extended ADSL2 (RE-ADSL2) adds about 750m to ADSL's maximum range. At the moment, UK subscribers need to be located within about 5.5km to 6km of a BT exchange to get 512kbits/s DSL services. RE-ADSL2 would extend that coverage to 6.25km to 6.75km at the same bandwidth, while lower data rates of 256kbits/s to 384kbits/s would be possible over distances stretching to almost 7.5km."

It reports that RE-ADSL2 should be in by around the middle of 2004, but the current estimated distances are mentioned there.

Remember it's not geographical distance, but the length the cable is - sometimes housing estates very close to exchanges can't get ADSL because the cable loops all the way round the town before ending up back at them.
(This happened to a friend of mine and he was NOT happy.)
