Cheap International calls over Wi-Fi when travelling abroad

My job requires extensive travel and on most of my business trips abroad I incur high roaming costs. Are there any good International calling apps out there which would help me make calls using either a hotel WiFi or public Hotspot?

Viber, Line and now Facebook messenger. They work much better over wifi than they do over data, but that's to be expected.

Problem is, they need to have the app as well. I don't know of any apps where you don't need them.

We use sipdiscount.com - they have an app or you can use your landline or mobile. Works well.

I used Skype on my mobile a while ago to call Corsair's US freephone helpline, was very effective - much more so than I expected.

There are many International Calling apps in the market. Check Google Play for options.I use Skype for video calling and another app named Global Call for making cheap International calls to land-line and mobile phones .I noticed Global Call works better than Skype over WiFi /public hotspots.

I travel a lot and use Skype to call landlines and mobiles in the UK from my smartphone or tab over wifi. Just topup when I run out of credit and £10 lasts a long long time.

I use the BT smart talk app. You get to use your landline calling plan while you are abroad. Not sure if this is available on BT's business packages however.

If your company has sip you can open up your SIP gateway to the internet and have your phone log in. This also means you can keep use your office phone number to make and receive calls meaning cheaper incoming calls from your contacts

Within US I use Google Voice but when I travel to Asia I cannot use the popular apps since most of them require high speed internet.I tried Viber Out but the calls get dropped and I can barely hear what the person at the other end wants to convey.

Global Call ? Never heard of this app. I'm a little skeptical about trying new apps. Tried a bunch of calling apps in the past but either the rates are high or call quality is bad.

Even I wasn’t aware of this app until my recent trip to Vietnam where I saved on my roaming charge by using Global Call. It seems like a popular calling app in Asia . It’s a simple pay as you go app but you can use it only to call Landline and mobile phones .For the rates you’ll have to check their website uglobalcall.com

I tend to go with Viber for calls. It works even on relatively slow wifi connections, although is does sound a little tinny at times

do you think Viber Out is a bit expensive? It's new and I think the cheapest country Viber applied is India only.

I usually make my business visits to China,Phillipines ad Vietnam and most of the times the internet speed is sluggish which makes it quite difficult to place free internet calls over Viber. I tried pay as you go option of Viber Out by purchasing calling credits but the calls kept getting dropped and I was charged for all those dropped calls.

I just downloaded Global call from Google Play. The call rates are pretty similar to Google Voice.

I think you are missing the promotion they are having right now, which may save you a lot. it's buy 1 get 1 free, you can join here: www.globalcall-1plus1.com

If you go with a voip/sip softphone solution you can get phone numbers assigned to you which are in the various countries you visit - so that your clients can call you at their normal in country rates and with a normal phone - no need for them to have an app.

I'm sure they would be charging a high subscription fee .Actually I'm the one who needs to make phone calls to clients . Will it display my original mobile number ? The problem with most voip apps is that when you call it displays a weird number format or it displays "private number " to the person whom you are calling and in such cases most of my clients disconnect the call.
