    Wireless adaptor

    Hello everyone.

First of all, I want to say that I am a total noob at this stuff so please excuse me if my nomenclature is not spot on. So I am renting a place and the landlord has Sky broadband, although I don't know what the speeds are. I only use mobile at the moment, but if it helps, I could post a speestest. I am building my PC and in my searches I found out that I have to get a wireless adaptor (I saw that there are USB ones and PCI ones I think).

Could you recommend me some adapters? I'm looking for the best bang for the buck here. My budget is flexible but not too big. I would like something that gets the most of the available speed, even though there are other devices connected (while also being a little future proof if possible-capable of greater speed than the current sky broadband).

I hope that I posted in the appropriate forum. Thank you for reading and for your responses.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

I have the Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I, no driver issues or usage.

Besides features one thing that made me get this was the black PCB, I thought green would look bad against mobo black.

At the time £20.49, some owners experience shares in the HUK thread.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

Damn, that would have been a good deal. I'll check that website some more maybe I'll find something.

Can someone share their opinion about powerline adapters? Read another thread and the general opinion was favourable. Could you make some recommendations?

Thank you for all your help.

If the router is in the same room as where your computer will be the best and fastest option is wired over LAN. Wi-Fi is of course is very handy, when ever I needed a USB dongle I just got the cheapest there is. Like £2.65 from ebay. Spending more is only worth it if you have super fast internet, online gaming, upload / downloading big files.

Power line adapters I have used but never have worked that well. if the two sockets or more you use are not on the same ring then you get no network. Also they use a power point which I never seem to have enough.

I would try a cheap dongle and go from there.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

Yep, I'm using wireless from sky and not 4G when I'm home.

Talked to the owner about putting a cable from one room to another but he isn't very open to this solution. That's actually why I need to solve this another way.

Our rooms are separated only by a thin wall so the pc would be really close to the router and being broadband I'd like to take advantage of the speed so maybe the cheapest USB adapter would not be ideal. And while I am looking for something with the best bang for the buck, I'd hate to lag when I'm watching a video to be honest.

As far as powerline adapters go, what do you exactly mean by them having to be on the same ring? The same circuit maybe? If so that's solved as only a wall separates us.

Need to dig a little deeper with this before finally making a decision.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

I would also check what router you have and if it even supports N draft and or 5 GHz Wireless, no point in paying out for a dongle if the features are not used.

Also power line, if you use a LAN cable then that is ok as long as you can route the cable to the unit, if you use WiFi you may as well go straight to the router.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

I've got the Asus PCE AC68. A bit more pricey, but a very strong signal reception across 3 aerials. Nice long range to it, full strength signal from 2 floors away. If you're going to be gaming on a wireless network it is a must have.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

Don't bother trying to get the best wifi adaptor if you're using it with Sky's router.

The Sky Hub uses an older standard - 802.11n single channel 2.4GHz. If your landlord has normal ADSL then frankly this is about all you need anyway, but for people with fibre broadband and a bit of distance to the router then Sky's Hub isn't a great device.

I agree with TheDutyPaid and think a cheap USB dongle is the way to go. No messing around opening up computer cases either.

    Re: Wireless adaptor

Might as well share with us for later reference what USB dongle you went for? I have my personal favorite Edimax EW-7722UTn V2. Very stable, 300Mbps (most of the times), better reception that the average laptop mini-PCIe card and got it under £4

    Re: Wireless adaptor

I also have the same issue but I will be gaming and streaming so I need a relatively cheap but effective either Usb or Pci Wireless networking device.
