    Direct Network?

Hey I was just wondering if this is possible or if im wasting my time.
My friend and I are trying to set up a network.
His computer connect to the internet through USB modem (ADSL connection)
We have connect an ethernet cable going directly from his ethernet card to mine.
We have set up a network connection on his computer, so that other computers connect throught the internet on his pc
and ive set it up on mine so that i connect to the inter net through another computer or residential gateway(which is what ive always had it on cause at home i connect through a router)
weve set up the network groups to be the same, then restarted both pc's but it doesnt register it says on both pcs a network cable is unplugged, and there is no indicating light on the ethernet cards.
Any suggestions I've never set up a direct connection(is iteven possible?)
Would be very grateful for help

I have a similar setup at my house whereby I am connected to NTL Cable Modem via USB and my mate upstairs is connected to me via Cat5 (crossover cable) and it works ok. What sort of ethernet cable are you using betwee the two machines?

You will need a crossover cable between the 2 computers, otherwise you'll be trying to send info down the same wires the other computer is also sending them, therefore it won't work.

Get one of those or a small router, that will solve your problem.

If cars had followed the same developmental path as computers, a Rolls Royce would cost £60, get a million miles per gallon and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

If it doesn't have any markings on the cable itself, then one way to tell is to check the order of the coloured wires in the plastic clip. If they are identical then it's not a cross over cable and he wouldn't have been able to use it without a router. I can't remember the exact layout crossover cables should be (is it the exact opposite) but you should be able to tell.

    "NetMaster UTP ENHANCED CAT.5 248WGx4P PATCH TYPE CM (UL) C(UL) CMG E164469 - ISO/IEC 11801 & EN 50173 & TIA/EIA 568A 3P VERIFIED BONEAGLE"
thats the markings on the cable and the colour of the wires are red, orange, green/white, blue, white, green, white, brown.

if its says PATCH its unlikely to be a crossover cable

    this illustrates what Allen said
Crossover should be wired like such

Buy a crimping tool and change the cable to a crossover cable.

id rather pay a measley £25 and get a router, the benefits far out weigh any saving.
