Bittorrent downloads competing
I've just moved into a new house with a new friends, and we're now sorting out networking and Internet stuff. At home, I was really the only one who downloaded any big stuff, so I just pleased myself and did what I like! In this house though, there may be some issues.
I'm wondering about the Bittorrent protocol. At home, I set a recommended maximum upload speed of 25kbps, to get the best speed from torrents. I was told that if you set it too high and flood your upload bandwidth, your download speeds actually suffer. With this in mind, if two people in my house are trying to download a torrent at the same time, and have the recommended highest upload speed set, will the upload bandwidth be flooded, and slow down their downloads? I'm thinking of suggesting that one person be in charge of torrent downloading, so that we can control it a bit and make sure that the connection's always free enough for web browsing and email stuff. Does this sound like a good policy? *note* Please don't start going on about illegal downloading, I often use Bittorrent clients to download large Linux distributions, and I'll leave it that! |

Yes, 1 person can flood the upstream and cause issues.
Best to let 1 person do it all or get some kind of throttling control on your gateway/router. |

Okay, thanks for that, and I'll investigate the throttling control thing too! Because torrent files are so easy to either link to or simply send to each other, this might be the best policy I think!

You could pick up some old pc and use that as your torrent mashine, get everyone to use that then share the drives on it. You can set up any bandwith trotteling on that PC and no probs.

i used a managed level 3 switch i aquired, to force some QoS settings on people.
Easyest way is to use m0n0wall with a spare box, firewall your whole LAN, but use its easy to use bandwidth sharing. priroitise HTTP requests. Let everyone fight it out fairly (or not as the case may be).
