A second ADSL router on the same phone line?
I have just been given a wireless ADSL router (for free), a 54G model, and wondered how feasable it would be to connect it to a second telephone line and use as another access point (assigning different channels etc to avoid overlap)?
I thought of this as a better option than trying to use it as some sort of booster to improve the range of my current wireless setup.
Is it as easy as I thought? Or would my ISP (Pipex) have some sort of feature preventing this?
Re: A second ADSL router on the same phone line?
No, you can only have one ADSL modem on the line at the same time; the DSLAM in the telephone exchange can only connect to one device.
But you could connect your new router to the old one, and then use it as an access point on difference channels etc as you describe. You could connect with an ethernet cable, or (if you have the kit / are happy to buy it) homeplug powerline networking, or even networking over phone cabling (no clear advantages over the more popular homeplug).
If your new (or old, if you swap them) router supports "meshing", that could avoid the connection problem. In a mesh, each access point connects to the network over a wireless connection, and then sets up as an access point in it's own right. You can sometimes enable this by updating the firmware - worth checking the web to see if there's a version (or a hack) that does this.
