Guys, what's the best software for network diagrams like the one unrealrocks drew?

    Anyway, my network:

Origo 8100 ADSL modem/router, connected to 8-port Scan switch
From the switch via CAT5e, there's 700mhz, 800mhz and 900mhz duron-based machines for the family, 200mhz laptop acting as printer/scanner server connected to an MPC200 multifunction printer/scanner, my Latitude 840 laptop and my 1ghz (soon to be Mobile Barton) machine. My laptop and main rig both have wireless lan cards for when I want to take the laptop about the house, and laptop has a bluetooth USB dongle allowing me internet access on my P900 and file-sharing with my T68i.

Ok, noob when it comes to networking, this is my first successful netowrk with 2 YES 2! computers. SO,

    I have:

1Mbit ADSL line from Nildram (Without router), this is connected to my desktop which has an Intel PRO/100 Network Conn. Out of this and into my laptop is a basic crossoever cable. A few check boxes here and there and hey presto! My laptop and desktop share the connection 50/50! woo! I'll be getting a wireless USB network card for my desktop soon (and other computers) to connect to my laptop without the messing about of 1 wire lol. Plus the range is good on a wireless.

    Signatures are stupid

    D-Link DSL-G604T modem/router (wireless )
Crappy Packard Bell/PIII 500(see below) via ethernet card (will be wireless one day!)

I used to have a network, but decided that the case that one of my computers was in was causing no ends of problems, so I dismantled my PII 350Mhz comp and put my AMD system in the same case.

However I do plan to rebuild a network.

Bored of the old one, new one coming soon

I sound stupid in saying, but what is a network in this sense?

What are they used for? Like running a permanent CS server or seeding a bit torrent?

My pc it connected to my Dad's Laptop. My dad just wants to connect through the router to the net but I have more storage space at my disposal being in a network with that laptop.

I got the two, yes two computers linked via the wireless router on my ntl connection that i think even your average monkey could setup. Still its all i need at the moment. One day i shall be the owner of something worth braging about. I can feel it. Very impressed with some of the setups you've got here. I can but dream.

Try setting up with win2k rather than winXP's networking wizard.

Correct me if I'm wrong but only blueyonder/NTL offer more than 1Mb internet in the UK. Also the 2Mb that they supplied has now had a 50% increase to 3Mb. So 2Mb no longer exists in the UK. I have 1.5Mb/s = 180KB/s. or 187.5KB/s to be precise but I only ever seen 180KB/s.

NTL do not offer 2mbit cable, Only Telewest do(or did) As it has now been upgraded to 3Mbit. Ntl offers 1mbit/ 600K and the 150K service.(both NTL and Telewest are to my knowledge increasing the speeds of their services by 50%)

As for ADSL there is plenty of providers out there who provide 2mbit ADSL to home users, e.g. Nildram, Bulldog, SurfAnyTime, Freedom 2 Surf, Plus Net etc...

My 2mbit ADSL gives my anywhere between 210KB/s to 310KB/s

So I take it you forgot to consider ADSL?
