Exclamation Pipex problems, DOS attacks or ? ?

    Hi all,

About two days ago i started getting problems with my connection.

    I use a Netgear DG834PN, i have had it about 1 week.

Anyway i noticed that the sync light kept going down, or barely being visible. Sometimes i would lose my connection, others the internet would just be really slow and i couldnt get on the routers status page.

Then i started a ping request to the bbc -t

I noticed on there that sometimes my ping would for about 5-10 seconds go up from 27ms to 1440ms 1220 1990 1080 450.

After this period it would return to 27ms and all would be well again till next time.

I went into the router logs and i am getting logs about DOS (denial of service attacks)

At first i thought it could be this but sometimes i get this internet loss or slowdown and my router does not log it as a DOS attack.

    Anyone point me in the right direction ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

    Thanks

    Stu

You're not running a bittorrent client at the same time by any chance are you?

I've had quite a few problems with Pipex over the past couple of months, major disconnects, etc.

My post and the responses came be found here:
Is anyone else having connection trouble with Pipex?

That is about the gist of what happens, its random, but for the last two days my xbox live gaming sessions have been near on impossible. I have spoken to pipex and they are supposed to be looking into it

My router hasnt reported anymore DOS attacks since 11:00,this was taken way after and still did this so i would assume it is not because of the DOS attacks.

Might be worth setting up a L8nc account (www.l8nc.com) and run test for a day or so to see what it says.

Any reason why my ping would have gone up consistently from 15ms to 26-28ms ? ?

What could have caused this, I did notice that my line sync speed went from 8.1 to 7.6.

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7616 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 21.0 db
Noise Margin 10.3 db 23.0 db

Is it because of these values ? ?

Maybe it's down to contention on the exchange or line or even a DSLAM issue.

I found a link to an exchange checker and it said that the exchange was fine and working how it should.

I am unfamiliar with DSLAM, but i have noticed that since November when i originally got ADSL to now, My line sync rate dropped from above 8 to 7.6 and certain values in my Line Attenuation and noise ratio seem to have changed.

I would have thought that the norm for a bbc ping is around 15ms, if i am defaulting at 27ms i am adding 12ms to that, for gaming every ms saved come in handy especially when Americans are involved.

With the 15ms i am talking about off peak i dont expect to get 15ms all the time.

My line sync rate has dropped from about 6500 down to 4900, which basically means my 6MB service is now a 4.5MB one

At least at the moment (touch wood) it's a stable connection to the internet and I don't use that much bandwidth, at least CS:S is still smooth and playable.

As I say, maybe worth setting up a L8nc account and have them monitor your line for a few days - you may find that this latency and packet loss is happening a lot more than you think.

Carnagerover, I also saw similar delays when performing ping tests a couple of weeks ago.

Does anyone know if Pipex buying up Bulldog means that we are all sharing the same bandwidth, or is this an irrelevant point?

Did your ping return to normal ? ?

I have phoned pipex again today and i now have some tests to do over the next two days.

Last night i was pretty bad, i think there looking for it to be disconnections, but i dont think that it is disconnecting, its just loosing packets and getting latency problems.

I suppose once i have done these test i wont have to do them again so they can move onto something else hopefully that will fix my problem

After it stopped disconnecting I still had latency/slow connection issues. I've been using DSLZone UK (http://www.dslzoneuk.net/) to perform speed tests when I can as they record them all so you can look over a history of tests.

This is mine for the past 4 weeks:

I seem to have a steady connection now...
