Who cares about 1-2W of power consumtion on an HDD when you've got a CPU using anything from 25-100w and a GFX card using anything from 50-150 at idle!

I agree, I used to use 2x 320GB drives but if one died (which at one time one did) I lost a lot of things but it wasn't as bad as loosing 750GB or more. Currently I'm running 2x 750GB F1's in a mirror array mostly for that reason, loosing 750GB of stuff would be really nasty, 1.5TB would be /slitwrists.

Either Seagate should offer data recovery off of a dead drive during the RMA process or its just senseless buying bigger drives as youve got more to loose, unless you can afford 2 for a raid setup.

Over the years, Ive bought similar size / slightly bigger drives just to do data recovery when I've had a 'delayed write failure' on an external USB drive, and still all my drives are full. Currently I feel 500Gb is about an optimum size, and cheap enough to buy instead of copying/archiving to DVD (in terms of time and £ notes). Mind you my first drive was 340Mb!

anyone know how much these might realistically retail for in the uk, and when they will be available?

a 1TB drive can be easily had for £90 now, i imagine the price will drop a bit more in the next couple of months before 1.5TB drives come out, say £75-80, so perhaps twice as much money for 50% more storage? thus £150 ish? the prices have been coming down as each bigger size drive comes out, so whlst 1TB drives were about £175 at first, i'd guess 1.5TB drives, although bigger, will be a bit cheaper

i'd like to get rid of a number of drives by dumping everything on one of these and keep the old drives as the backups

So what, your saying its not a lot of data to lose? The only reason we need bigger drives is becuase 1 file takes up more space due to bloated code. In 1980 1.5TB would probably have been enough data loss to cripple a country. These days its enough to make some one cry... a lot. If you need to RAID 1 or RAID 5 these drives its going to cost so its not worth it, at the moment anyway. Just wait until file sizes start to mean that 1.5tb isn't a lot to lose.

Why should Seagate give you free data recovery because you haven't got a system in place?

Do HP or Dell offer free data recovery off of a single drive server because you didn't spend the extra for a RAID5 solution?

1.5tb is a lot to lose, but you don't need to buy a 1.5tb drive. 250gb is still available you know... you make your choices and pay your monies.

Can you imagine how much these things would cost if there was a free data recovery service with every RMA... the cost would likely be 3 times as much... especially after the issues with the 7200.10s.

Bloated code has nothing to do with it, more the fact that we now store video in digital form.
Did you ever store video on HDDs when 340Mb / 800Mb drives were current?

Any small data loss is enough to do that, depending on the nature of the data.
Just backup your data, buy two 1.5TB drives

I'm saying that when 3TB drives come out, people will start saying
"3TB is a lot to lose, I'll stick with 2x 1.5TB drives instead" etc

no but I would not have any need to store 1.5tb of home video and ripping DVDs is illegal.

No matter how you look at it 1.5tb is a lot to lose and 2 x 1.5tb is very expensive at the moment.

i'm also interested in getting a pair of the 2.5" 500gig 7200rpm drives for my laptop. the samsung m6's still aren't around in the uk, but they are only 5400rpm. that would be a fair boost from 2x 160gig 5400rpm drives. probably cost at least £300 for the pair though
