I must say I've lost a lot of respect for Asus for previously saying that the 901 would be released in large numbers with no shortage of stock... I'm still waiting for a linux black 901 to be available somewhere for me to buy it!

It's starting to become terrible marketing practise today with many big manufacturers... If dell give a release date for their mini-inspiron, I might just forget my ideas of buying a 901 and get a mini-dell instead!

Asus are missing the point with the newer Eee models. Its not size alone, Sony have made small PCs for some time, it was the size combined with price. Even at $549 the Eee 1000 is too expensive. Its a good piece of kit and I want one... just not enough to pony up the silly money Asus are wanting!

I think they also need to knock off £50-70 on the 901 as well as that is way over priced.

I don't care... I just want it available!... I was waiting for the 901 black linux, but I don't care about an extra 8gb HDD anymore, I was going to install XP on it anyway... I'll just buy a big high speed SD card! I'm just waiting for it to come available somewhere again now, I wish I had bought it from ebuyer when it was available but I was expecting the linux to become available soon... now I'm stuck with no choice again. As soon as I see either for sale somewhere at a good price I'll buy it.

But if news of the mini dell comes first, they can go <The swear filter is there for a reason, there is no need for language like that mate> themselfs, I know dell will release it when they say they will!

True, but th little Sony laptops are around £1200+. Granted they are much better spec than an Eee or a Wind, but there is no way I can justify in my own mind spending £1200 - £1800 on an itty bitty laptop, but I can see myself spending up to £400 depending on the spec.

What sony offered 3-4 years ago for £1500 still now sells second hand for around £600-£700+... The Atom and the chipset used in these new subnotebooks is about the same performance as the sony's subnotebooks were 3-4 years ago. But the huge advantage over the atom machines is battery life! Plus these 8.9" models are also much smaller than the sony 10" subnotebooks. 1 inch doesn't seem like a lot, but it is! especially when the casing fits so snugley around the smaller screen.

I'm more than happy to pay £299 for the eee 901

I find apples build quality to be shoddy quite frankly. a friend of mine is a big advocate of Apple but all the things he has, despite having some good features, are plasticy and poorly made not to mention really expensive! the Mac Mini he has for example looks awful has low spec but it was £500! the Eee boxs look nice and £30 would get you an external DVD drive for it... all the features and less than half the prices.

I have an Eee 901 and its a solid little machine, build quality far surpasses the previous models.

I finally have my 901... it's beautiful and feels very high build quality... don't quite no what to do with it now though lol... but I'm sure I'll appreciate it when I'm out and about... I may have to make a special place for it in my glove box.
