X and I, the two most overused characters in marketing departments the world over.

And yes, we have an X, but we've had once since before it was cool.

I wonder if they even seriously considered "Core 3"? It makes perfect sense in relation to their "tick-tock" strategy as well.

There was Core and Core2, so thats the tick-tock strategy finished.

But what will be the "Tock" of i7? i8?

Where is the bus speed for my internets?

Perhaps, it will be "i72" or "i7a", things that make equally as much sense as i7 does in the first place.

I think i7 is the right concept: I like that they're reclaiming I for intel, like 780i = 780 chipset, intel edition on nForce boards, but i7 is ugly as and you're quite right, does not roll off the tongue well.

I would have been happy with Intel 7, if Windows 7 weren't just around the corner

Re: Headlines - Intel Nehalem to be named Core i7

Presumably they don't want to use "Core 3", as that implies an incrimental model, rather than the 'super amazing new design' image they would rather promote for Nehalem.

To me, "i7" seems like a very strange choice indeed, since it has none of the normal desires from a product branding. It doesn't roll of the tongue, it isn't highly identifiable as meaning an Intel product, it isn't clearly a name not a number (Intel apparently originally chose 'pentium' because they couldn't trademark a number), and "i7" is not evocative of anything at all.

Whilst we might see this branding used for less consumer-focused parts, I strongly suspect that they will not actually be going with this. If they do, I can only reason it would be to let AMD have the stronger processor name for reasons of placating competition commisions

Personally, I'm happy just using Nehalem for now until whatever they do pick sticks

I wonder how much the people who came up with this got paid? They deserve nothing, it's a terrible name. Clearly the influence of their partnership with Apple has had an effect.

It's been pointed out on other forums that i7 is a term used with Itanium architecture. Maybe they are migrating Itanium over to the Core brand name?

Either way, Core 3 is a much better name!

Core i7 is a beautiful name!
I have one question. I saw here www.core-i7.com that the release date is october 2008. Can anyone confirm this?

Seems a bit like they are going back to their roots

I remember when we had i386 and then i486 (back when AMD made clones, the "i" distinguished them), then they stopped licensing the designs and changed the name of the next chip to Pentium (as it allowed copyrighting....a number cannot be)

Pentiums would have been 5th generation CPUs (hence the "Pent"), I guess that makes Core2 sixth generation......Nehalem = i786 ?

Perhaps numbers aren't a problem to them any more now that there is a VERY distinguished difference between each manufacturers CPUs? I'd have loved to see it called i786 or i80786 for "old times sake"

Nope, hang in there I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. I'm pencilling in my new rig for January - by then it will be clear whether Deneb or Nehalem will be the right choice - and hopefully some decent mobos out also!

Im still rocking socket 939 AMD stuff but it sounds like the wait will be worth it, specially with some cheaper 4870 x2's or somthing, cant want
