Oh come on, how many updates?

I write this blog entry from my laptop as my main work rig is once again restarting itself... as it seems today is update day!

For a while now I've had a whole bunch (44) of problems which Vista would notify me of when a solution becomes available... we're talking everything from Bluetooth drivers, MCE system drive errors, Windows Defender and so on... basically, to look at the list you'd wonder how the damn PC even manages to start.

Of course, the ever helpful Vista help guide points me towards Windows Update which, other than constantly offering me 34 language packs I don't want, never has anything in there to solve the issues the PC seems to think it has.

    Until today.

Yes, today the Problems and Solutions list opened to show a massive bunch of solutions for pretty much every problem residing on my PC... but first I was advised to update the error reporting which I did... and then sat there as the PC did a 9Meg upload just for the MCE issue.. 9 MEG!!! For one problem!

So that's why I'm on the lappy as I let my main rig chunter it's way through sending details to MS.

I find it strange that I've had most of these errors and problems for so long and now suddenly they're all getting fixed. Maybe someone at MS has seen their contract is up for renewal and has decided to do some work?

Anyhoo, I've grabbed all the software I need, printed off the instructions I need for various filename changes and deletions (thank you Windows Defender and MCE) and now the main rig is happily rebooting AGAIN...

And to top it all, whilst opening up FireFox on this lappy, not only did Flashgot install an update but FireFox bloody well updated too!

Now I'm all for keeping my software up to date and I really appreciate that apps such as FireFox are free and extremely useful but come on, twenty updates on two machines in one morning?

    AAAAAarrrrrrggggghhhhhh!

Tell me about it; it's one of those situations where every damned app that you install feels that it has the right to load some damn "preload" applet that sits there just in case you want to launch the main app at some point in the future (Adobe Reader) or monitor for bits of kit being plugged in, removed, whatever (HP "Digital Imaging Monitor"), or download updates on an insanely frequent schedule (AVG), all for our own good...aaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!!!

The worst bit is when you go through all that and then find one of the updates breaks a piece of software you use regularly, and short of a reinstall or rollback, you can't fix it.

    Damn updates...

Yep, like sh Player update just did...

The install failed, it wanted to restart anyway, I restarted to be presented with a black screen and the dialogue box that Explorer has stopped working.. and that was it.

One reset and reboot later and I'm back up and running but gah, wtf and all other manner of expletives!

Odds are your boot sector is messed up on your HDD.

check your BIOS boot options, then restore the boot sector by running the install cd into the recovery console and do a fixmbr (google will find a guide for you, if you've any doubts do that because you can always screw up your data).

Worst one I've got is that WMP 11 keeps nagging me each and every time I use it that there is an update for MCE2005. So I close WMP when I'm finished, get the pop-up window stating theres an update, download it and try to apply, low and behold each and everytime it fails!
