Mario Kart Wii - anyone else a bit let down?

Bit of a question here for the rest of you. I was a huge fan of the SNES original, so rushed out to get MKWii.

I spent a fair few hours on it and I'm now coming to the conclusion that I'm not really liking it. I'm getting really frustrated with the AI catchup and the fact that the AI just nails you senseless as soon as you get to the last corner if you're in a semi decent place. It might as well be scripted, last corner... and... BAM. Back to 10th place.

Anyone else finding it's more about luck than judgement?

I'd agree the AI does seem a little dodgy in places. I found the 50cc to be relatively easy but the 100cc was a little more challenging.

The 150cc however, I was 'killed' (read hit by a blue shell) 3 times in a row when I was basically on the finishing line! Surely that's not coincidence..

I'd have to agree there is definitely luck involved

It definately cheats, pretty horrifically. However you will find that your skill goes up to a level that it doesnt matter how much they cheat as you will still win. Also playing with a gamecube pad made it much easier!

There will definitely come a point where you cross a barrier of still being too good for the AI even with the "cheats" / catch-up... you just need to stick with it. You'll find this online as well, the really good players out there (8000+ points) are starting to win basically every race comfortably, unless there are other equally good players around and then it becomes proper competitive racing with not so much luck involved. I got really frustrated with online play at first and was one of the "I'd rather be last going into the last lap" people, but I'm now finding that I'm building up enough of a lead for that not to be a problem, and it becomes a battle with just the other decent players.

I am getting a bit annoyed with the AI.

If you could turn off the Blue shells it would maek the game so much more fun imo

I've not played this on the wii, have played most other types though (missed out on the cube version) I used to remember if you played 2 player things behaved themselves but in single player the AI would start to nail you even after you knock them off the track or literally naffed-off. the margin would be cut to nothing before you knew it. in 2 player that sort of thing doesn't really happen

I was a little disappointed with it graphically at first. I know it's the Wii, so it was never going to be some hi-def beauty, but I dunno, it wasn't really what I expected. The more I play it, the more I love it though, especially online play. The AI could be described as a bit anti-competitive I guess!

Nope not really that dissapointed - only dissapointment was with the tracks really, as I wanted a couple more of the original snes ones to appear..but thats not really a big issue

I've not noticed any "cheating" going on by the AI - just the usual catchup that has been present in previous MK games. I do sometimes get hit by a blue shell or something right on the line but not as often as you suggest..seems pretty normal tbh and happens just as much with CPU players as it does online. Thats just the nature of the game - if your in a bad place you get good items, so the person up front is likely to get battered more than anyone else.

I agree, it's great online. If I didn't have connection I doubt I'd still be playing single player.

There should have been loads more new tracks, it feels like the same tracks crop up again and again in the voting.

If I get one more blooming banana on this game as a special weapon, I'm going to scream.

How can I get 5 banana's in a row, yet they all get the special weapons that always home in and knock me off bridges and mushrooms at the 'magic' point.

It's a good game, but it can be frustrating as hell at times

It depends heavily on which place you are in Think of it like a loot matrix..if your in 1st place you only realyl have access to green shells, bananas and single mushrooms - those at the rear of the pack will get all the good things (spiny shells, 3 red, bullet/star etc).

Well I got this game to play against friends really as i beleive thats its strongest point. 4 player on the wii, with reletivley skilled comrades is awesome. in single player the game can be tricky (150cc), but now ive clocked it, i think it isnrt that hard.

    still ultra playable and enjoyable.

    my 10cents.
