New to Wii!
Hi all,
Bought a wii today. Made some money flogging my arcade machine and boards on Ebay. Am currently having psychotherapy for low self esteem/ anxiety and one of the things I obsess about is money. Was going to put it into savings, as I always do, but wife and I were chatting and thought sod it, I know I want one, let's buy it. So we did. And have spent the afternoon laughing at the Sport Tennis game. And playing golf. Great fun. I got battle of the bands and Lego Indy with it as well. BOTB is, IMHO, crap. Will be flogging it. BUT.. I need you help... must have games, please, with an emphasis on fun, humour, 2 player co-op if possible, and repeat-playability. I'm thinking: big brain academy, perhaps? Might get Zelda for some more "mature" running around fun. And I've got my eye on Force Unleashed and Batman Lego in future, but as of right now, what's hot? |

Re: New to Wii!
Sometimes the artificial "intelligence" is a bit skewed on Mario Kart Wii if you're playing against the computer, but it's still a damn good game. Online play is where it really comes into it's own.
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the most beautiful games ever to grace any console. It's a MUST HAVE. That's not exaggeration BTW, it is genuinely an absolute essential. If you can only buy one game, buy this; you won't regret it. Despite the Wii's "limited" graphical capabilities, Super Mario Galaxy is fantastically designed, the music is some of the best I've heard in a computer game, and the game play is perfect. Absolutely perfect. It's a real, real joy to play and no gamer should ever turn down the chance to play it. It's sort of a "one and a half" player game, in that you can have a second player helping out by picking up star bits and stopping enemies, but you can't play with two characters or anything like that. I'm surprised you've read mixed reviews; I fail to see how ANYONE can think it's anything but superb. and I don't remember seeing any negative reviews.

Re: New to Wii!
No. Nothing is. Mario Kart on the Snes was a pixel perfect game, the CPU didn't cheat - if you were good enough you could lap up to 5 of them (you couldn't do that on ANY Mario Kart since without cheating), the weapons were balanced and fair - no last lap, last corner blue shell woes, and the handling of the karts were perfect. Kind of like Street Fighter 2.
No Mario Kart has come close since, and I've had, and completed every single one. This, is comfortably the closest since - it has the same, pick up and play factor, and also the same, you can get amazingly good if you put a lot of effort in. It's a fun, rewarding, frustrating laugh a minute (especially with your friends) experience. Add to that the effort Nintendo put into longlevity in one player, multiple cups, vehicles, reverse tracks, downloadable challenges, time trials, ghosts etc Edge gave it 5/10. I don't think I'll ever read Edge again - this game is what games used to be - pure, unadulterated fun. The most fun of this generation, easily. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Mario Galaxy is simply an amazing platform game - IMO on a par than Mario 64 (just). The reviews say it all 97% on metacritic - which takes every review and works the average out, with a 90% + User rating (unlike Halo and GTA 4). These are the games for you. |

Re: New to Wii!
To echo Mike and Bazz...
Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart are more than worth the price of the system alone- they really are that good Mario Kart online? Sheer brilliance

Re: New to Wii!
Wii play is worth looking at if you are going to get another Wiimote. Some of the games (cow racing for example...
) are fun for a little bit and Scan sell it for less than the price of a remote anyway.

Re: New to Wii!
I was pleasantly surprised with the internet connectivity. Was amazed I was allowed to set a static IP and present with the MAC address without having to wade through pages of crap.

Fun for a while, but you start to long for a large open ended map like in previous mario games...
Its still an amazing game and one of the best I have for my wii, but its no mario64 beater, thats for sure. Guitar Hero 3 is another must have purchase for the wii - along with galaxy and MK thats the other one i've played to death.

Anyway, back to the original topic - I'd recommend Ghost Squad if you can pick it up for less than £15 for some good multiplayer shooting action (it's very cheesy and quite short, but a lot of fun anyway). Also, if you're looking for a quality single player game (along the lines of Zelda) you can't go wrong with Okami or No More Heroes. Also, Wii Fit is pricey, but quite fun, I've not got it myself, but tried it out as my mum has it (mad, my mum never touched games for years until the Wii came out!). Ditto with Guitar Hero III. Oh, almost forgot to mention PES 2008 is a quality football game for the Wii - I haven't played a football game for years until this one, and it's amazing how much more fun and easy to pick up it is with the wii specific control scheme. |
