For 8 year old son 3DS or WII U ?

Which device would you recommend ? What's the main difference ? the 3DS is compatible with DS games, but how about the WII U ?

And is it worth the £50 to upgrade to an 3DS XL ?

    Thanks

Opinions on the Wii U are mixed.

I myself just got a 3DS XL for £170 with Zelda 3D after spending far too much time researching prices. Remember if you buy an XL you'll need to spend £7 more on a charger unless you have one from a DSi. (I used my GAME points and spent £2.50 on one, which arrived before the 3DSXL itself)

The extra screen space helps, but I have trouble staying in the 3D sweet spot when holding in in my hands. Depends on your son, whether he would like the bigger screen. I would recommend it though if possible.

If the Wii is anything to go by, the 3DS(XL) will last much longer with kids. Plus it keeps them quiet in the car! :3

I'd say the 3DS. It's a lot more child friendly and is great for car journeys etc.

Make sure you use the parental settings to turn off the 3D effect for car journeys. Don't want a new reason for kids vomiting in the back.

The 3DS is very child friendly and it's something he would be able to have in the car without getting bored (and he wont hog the tv) haha.

3DS are brilliant for people who can look at them and not want to vomit, for me its a waste but still amazing fun in 2D

Re: For 8 year old son 3DS or WII U ?

I love the 3DS, but the games are really limited. I only like MarioKart 7 and Zelda. My son's a big Pokemon fan - but they're played on his DSI-XL and not made for 3D gaming. DS has a good game catalogue. 3DS does not.The DSI-XL was many times better than the DSi and DSL. The shoulder buttons were made solid too. I'm guessing 3DSXL would be nice... and big too. £50 well spent.

However I'm buying a Wii U for Christmas. The controller might not be the best for small hands though! Zombie U & Lego City look really good!
So yes, Wii U (if you can still secure stock).

If you're still out there making this decision, you'll probably be able to manage play-time a little better with the Wii. 3DSs can be hidden away for bed times (though I suppose the Wii U actually has its remote play option too...)
