What do you think of the new Nintendo?

Personally I'm unsure I might give it a try later sometime when I have a bit more cash as I do like the mario karts and the smash brawls a bit of zelda and I think it will be interesting to see how cod handles.
Besides the games, how does it handle?
Do you find the features handy. I know you can be playing at one point and then switch over to tablet mode.
If anyone has one what are your thoughts

Only ever played it in GAME and the only game they had was Rayman Legends. Was surprised by how comfortable the controller felt although not sure it would be great for extended play.

I'm sure I'll find out once Bayonetta 2 gets released!

I'm waiting for them to drop in price before getting one.
even 2nd hand they're still quite pricey

We've only got the one TV that's in the lounge so I really like the idea that I can play on the controller without the TV.

Ditto, and I was most disappointed that with all of the demos they had up the jumbo controller with all it's potential was either a duplicate screen or off. It's a complete waste of the Wii-Us only USP. No real reason to replace my standard Wii.

I agree with above, for me as well doesn't really feel that much of an upgrade, certainly the games Ive played havent made much use of the controller

I think the Gamepad in theory was a goer but really apart from offscreen play (which I love), Nintendo isn't really bothered it would seem. ZombiU is still probably the best example of use in a game for the system.

Re: What do you think of the new Nintendo?

    I love my wii u.
I havnt played zombie u but would like to.
I agree that the control has a lot more potential but it does get used in some games.
its pointless for Mario cart. in Zelda it acts as your storage.
only complaint I can make about the control pad is I think the lettered keys on the right hand side a,b,x,y are in the slightly wrong position. I could be just me but I often press the wrong button thinking they are in a different position.
games are limited at the moment but theres plans for more. with the release of Mario cart sales for the wii u have rocketed so with more demand it is likely for more games to be made.

if you are big into fps like cod then this is not the console for you it will never compare to the xbox or ps4

Oh... I got suckered into thinking there's a new Nintendo console on the way but instead all I found was this year one old thread!

I posted on this thread as it was just about top of the list. I never looked at the date it was posted. I just assumed seen as it was high up on the list it was a new thread.
I will look at thread dates next time before posting

As thread resurrections go I think this wasn't so bad, most are "I would buy this instead" when clearly the original poster made their purchase 2 years ago

Ours gets used mostly for Mario Kart. I find having the track display on the tablet annoying as you can't really afford the time to look down to see how far behind the next person is. Thankfully the kids love acting as co-driver, reading out what is happening from the tablet so as a family thing it works well. Still, preferred controller for MK is the pro controller not the tablet. So for gameplay it isn't really doing anything the Wii couldn't do, but having the graphics in HD it really does look pretty so it does benefit from the new platform.

Re: What do you think of the new Nintendo?

I think it's a fair necro, I think the discussion is still relevant given the latest price drops. I'm now seriously considering getting a Wii U in time for Christmas (and that's ahead of a PS4/XB1, which have still left me utterly underwhelmed).

Must admit, it's Mario Kart that has swayed me. It's one of the few games on the Wii that me and the mrs would play regularly. But since upgrading the TV, it has hardly been used because of the upscaled graphics looking a bit poor.

Nothing else has really got my interest yet, but hopefully there'll be a decent golf/sports game and a good quality mario party/smash bros release (if there isn't already).

What's the backwards compatibility like, will it play all my old wii/GC games?

It doesn't play GC games. There aren't any GC controller inputs (we still have a Wii for that).

If upscaled graphics look bad on your new TV, have you looked at the contrast settings? The shop settings are usually to make it look really colourful and vivid. Great for cartoons, not so good for real life images and makes artefacting awful on compressed stuff. Have a look, if the colour settings are up at 80% or higher that is pretty typical, and setting to the middle will give a better picture. I paid quite a bit for my Samsung, and when I got home and saw the picture quality I thought oh god what have I done? Few adjustments, and it looks stunning.

Edit: The deluxe Wii-U package came with Nintendo Land which has had a lot of use as an all the family game and by the kids with their friends coming around.

Re: What do you think of the new Nintendo?

I don't have too many GC games anyway, got another Wii set up in a spare bedroom for that.

As for upscaling, Its more the soft edges that annoy me, same reason I can't watch DVDs on an HD screen any more. The TV does a good job at upscaling, with very few artefacts (and I think the colours are quite good, spent hours tweaking them) but stretching 480p signals up to 1080p just never looks right.

Re: What do you think of the new Nintendo?

This could be a legitimate revival if you factor in the newly announced 3DS XL. Designed more around gamers than casual players: 2 extra shoulder buttons plus a micro stick on the right side, plus improved field of vision for the 3D element.

Still, it's only a 3DS and game support isn't great when you think they will need to design games for use with the extra buttons etc.
