Vista partition, I need more space :(

Seems I was very stupid... 20gb is NOT enough for a vista partition... always used to be plenty for other os's.. they would maybe take 2gb up.


Vista takes 15gb!!!!
When I last checked, before SP1 it was 12gb

What, then can be deleted? (I do not like the idea of starting again, or playing with resizing tools)


Im now oof to find some dvd burning software.. as the windows one is useless. Try to burn a dvd, it first makes a copy in a temp folder, and then it makes a disk image, which is also a copy. So to burn a 5gb dvd, you need 15gb free in total! So I have no hope on this partition....

acronis have got some pretty good tools to resize your hd if you only have 20gb then go get yourself a newer and bigger hd. i believe you can get quite a bit with just £20 to £25

I assume your actual disk is much bigger than 20GB and that you have other partitions on it.

GPARTED is a pretty good and safe re-partitioning tool (download an ISO file, burn it to a CD and boot off it).

Other strategies (which you may have implemented) is to install applications to a different partition (so the OS is on C: applications on D: user data on E You can set up shortcuts etc to the various virtual drives. If you do move applications to a different drive number, in most instances you will have to uninstall and then re-install them - still a lot of faff.

If you do decide to re-partition, although GPARTED (and most other reputable partition editors, such as partition magic) is safe, you should back up any critical first.

Even windows vista have built in partition resizing tools
i never had a problem with it

yep, i've used the built in vista re-partitioning tools a few times now too - never had a problem - its in disk management

another recommendation for Vista's built-in repartitioning on the fly. Why spend more $$$ when you can have your drive resized for free?

I know you said that you don't want to play with partition resizers...

But Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 is an excellent one. You can create a bootdisk with it and do it out of Windows for max safety.

I recently repartitioned my RAID5 array with it and no problems here .

Can't comment on the tool - most pretty reputable ones are fairly safe - but I woould disagree with the statement

Anything as fundamental as a disk partitioning should not be done on a mounted disk. Many (if not all) partition managers, even if they are launched from the windows environment drop out of windows into a DOS (or other OS) mode for the actual re-writing and resizing of the partition table. I would expect (and hope) that partition manager does too.

One of the things (to my mind) that makes Gparted so attaractive is that the target disk is not mounted at all - by booting off a CD and running the application completely off the target disk gives (to me) an extra level of assurance. That is not to say that other tools are inferior or carry any greater degree of risk. Messing with the partition table is one of the highrerrtisk computer ioperations (which is why all tools recommend backing up important data before you start )

(And before anyone asks, IMHO the riskiest operation is re-flashing the BIOS - although not endangering any data, does run a risk of making the mobo un-bootable without hardware repairs).

Some more information.. All my programs and files are on other partitions/drives.

my install (as in c:\windows\, not including the other crap it puts on there...) now has grown from 12.5gb to 17.6gb


The drive is only 19.5gb big.

I do not have space for the latest windows updates ...



What can I safely delete from the windows folder.. it cant all be needed.. certinally wasnt in win98, which I beive could be trimmed down to something like 20?mB

1. type 'disk cleanup' in the vista start menu and run it.
2. Let ccleaner remove any remaining junk
3. run disk cleanup again and select 'more options' and delete older system restore points.
4. Take a look at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=202934 for files/folders that can be deleted.

Would be interested to hear how much free space you end up with.

Shrinking doesnt work on the other partition.. its 130gb.. after about 10 mins I get an access denied message, I have no idea why.. I have now moved everything off... deleted the other partition and extended the boot upto 50gb :D so all done.

thanks for the link above, that list is what I was after :) c:\windows is down from 17.5 to 16.9gb now, + about 2gb from elsewhere. Still ******* huge though.

I didnt bother with ccleaner since it doesnt really seem to do anything usefull from what the website shows.

It's specifically designed to delete old/unused/junk files from your system to free up space.

The second separate function is to tidy up your registry.

i turn off system restore as ive never needed to use it that saves quite a large amount of space.
