Quite possibly as I have silverlight 2 beta 2 installed on mine and its working fine, although a little slow but that's due to my virgin line running slow as hell atm :/

Fair point dangel - but I've got so much software that if I load up the default hardware profile I still get a load of services that seem to slow down boot up. So to disable manually on the fly would take some time. Maybe the difference isn't that much! - I just don't like the fact that every software programmer thinks that as soon as you switch on your PC their application must be running!

If you add more RAM, then vista will use it as a cache and speed up application loading. If you hibernate (or sleep) instead of shutdown that'll also help. Lots of ways and means of doing stuff thesedays I see your point though

You can make a batch file to stop services that you don't need and another to start them if you like

    For example:http://www.windowsreference.com/wind...staxp20032000/

I keep meaning to get around to this as when I'm using my 3D apps, they require a fair number of services to work (copy protection )

Re: MS tricks die-hard XP users into liking Vista

The Mojave experiment only used vista ultimate and not the other versions of vista. That makes quite a difference to the other 5 vista version.

I have used and supported vista home premium and vista business and literally if it doesnt have 3GB+ Ram, everything crawls.

Hence, my opinion is if its not vista ultimate, you're better off with xp pro (back in the day, it was also recommended xp pro > xp home). Hence, why oem manufacturers have been supplying machines downgraded to xp pro with an optional vista installation disk.

Not true. My PC originally had 2GB When I installed Vista on it. Yes it was vista ultimate but its requirements certainly aren't less than those of Home Premium or Business.

Where's the benefit of XP Pro over XP Home for most home users? It's the same OS, but with domain support and a few other funky bits (remote desktop etc) thrown in. It's no more efficient with resources, and the same is the case for Vista - Ultimate is no more or less efficient than Business or Home Premium.

Agreed, so just do what I have done for the last decade, disable them by default, and only start as-needed.

Note my original comment was 2GB ram for vista home/business. Ultimate is more stable and XP Pro is more stable after having to support multimedia, financial companies as well as the obligatory friends and family.

I am quite surprised you would say there is no difference in performance Splash, do you happen to have any evidence supporting this?

Perhaps back round to you to provide the evidence. On my 3 computers running home premium 2gb is more than enough for day to day tasks. I think any of the iterations of vista would need more memory for anything more intensive.

there is no difference in performance, assuming an equal set of enabled services. in fact, ultimate is likely to be slower, due to more services by default
