It doesn't seem to work. I get a "Windows update encountered an unknown error" code: 8024402F

Could it be a firewall setting? Does windows firewall block updates?

Is there way to download windows updates manually?

Looks like most commonly caused by issues with the temp directory for Windows update, or the service has been stopped.

Thanks Agent. I followed the steps in the post and have had no luck.

I thought it could be default lan controller drivers shipping with win7 - but I'm typing this. So I can connect to the net. Just updates that is giving me issues.

Unless he's explicitly modified them it should work just fine - I'd go with Agents suggestion it sound far more likely for the error code.

i have started to see 'access is denied' in cmd when turning off windows update. Have tried many solutions. One site indicates this is a problem only windows 7 32bit edition suffers. The other problem is some fixes can only be downloaded from windows update. Go figure.

AFAIK You can manually download updates if you know the specific ones that fix said issues.

MS support staff said if nothing else works I should add another 512mb stick to bring system ram to 1gb.

I can ping major portals on the net yahoo/google but cannot ping windows update site.

Ping is not a good method to detect connectivity to a site; Firewalls often block ICMP.

The comment from MS sounds like "we're not going to look into this as you are below the minimum requirements". Sounds harsh, but is a fair point.

it sounded more like, we tried what we know and maybe you want to add some memory because we dont have any other ideas.

I dont know that 512mb should be a reason why a PC cannot connect to MS website - Malware bytes has updated, antiVira has updated. This is dependent on on net connection.

Even if we go by your argument, surely MS should have some way to manually download security updates or have them shipped on cd when their own software isn't working. Hell, 3rd party sites will do.

For the record, this doesn't just happen with Windows 7, but has recently surfaced on a single XP image I use at work (in VMWare Workstation), and it uses WSUS. Nothing changed much on the image, so perhaps an update itself tripped it over.

More bizarrely, after rolling out that image to one type of PC it still exhibits the same issue, while after being rolled onto other PCs it sorts itself out.

My experiences are similar. I have only installed it 3x on the one system, same issue everytime.

I'll try it on spare pc to see if it resolves it.

UPDATE on error code 8024402F:

I tried to do windows update on my spare machine which is running windows XP. I got the same error code. Which led me to believe it wasn't the cd but something to do with my internet settings.

Solution: Something I had completely overlooked. My routers firewall is set to block javascript. Once I unchecked this from the firewall and then tried updating - it worked. I can't believe it.
