Re: Ubuntu 9.10 is up on the mirrors

I downloaded the netbook remix yesterday, and thought I'd try installing it on my Dell mini-9 this morning - but as soon as I plugged it in and it found the wireless network, it informed me that an update was available and offered the option of upgrading - so I accepted. So far, it's taken 2 hours to download what it needs, and says that it still needs another 2 hours to complete the install - however, it's been painless so far...

    4 hours! Blimey...
I dont know what to say. Did it say how much data was being downloaded over those first 2 hours?

Via wireless, over an office network with lots of other users - and the download part was under 2 hours.

    All up and running now.

Yeah probably, don't have any torrent software though and I wouldn't want to be a leecher Wonder what was with all the corrupted downloads though - I mean it's a good job I checked the hash!

UNBR doesn't want to install on my eee

Gets to the partitioner and crashes out

Are you trying to dual-boot - or this going to be the only os? If its the former and you are having issues within the partitioner from within the install i had some issues with this In the end with my ub 9.10 beta i found i had to boot the cd first "without install option" then run gparted. Sort the partitioning from there, reboot and then install - worked fine then. Was how i got my ub/windows 7 dual boot working nicely.

If it is only OS you going to use then still maybe try the pre gparted idea first before you do the full install.

'Tis going to be the sole OS (i hadn't thought about setting up partitions pre-install)

I'll give it a try later

    Cheers

    Shush!

Do any of our Linux Leets know if Ubuntu supports TRIM function on SSDs? I'm sure it must, but interested in a definite answer.

TRIM support was added to the kernel in .28 iirc, ext4 supports it now. So in short, yes, if you use the defaults.

Mine doesn't even get that far...

I can run it as a live cd (using external DVD/CD drive) but if I boot from it and try to install it seems to be going through the motions to setup the installer for about 5min then I get a login screen, for which I have not been prompted to create a user name and password for, and anything you put it comes up with "authentication failure" (including all the possible defaults I googled for). Then if I shutdown or restart it just says eject the cd and press enter...

Going to try a wubi install instead I think and whack it on the secondary SSD.

Edit: Tried the wubi install and... it doesn't work! turns out the version of wubi included with 9.10 doesn't work with 9.10 and needs fixing. Think I'm going to leave this alone until they sort it out.

Re: Ubuntu 9.10 is up on the mirrors

NBR running sweet on my Aspire One (AOA110), that'd be the one with the crappy SSD, updated the BIOS, installed, rebooted, disabled journaling, disabled atimes. Now you wouldn't think it were an Aspire One SSD netbook at all. As far as I can tell, everything works, sound, webcam, mic. I haven't touched the wifi killswitch though, don't particularly want or need to either. If it doesn't reenable after hitting it again I'd have to find the crappy Linpus disc.

Laptop/ubuntu-desktop, still the bizzare problem with HDA audio not working unless I explicitly add "model=auto" to snd-hda-intel's modprobe options, which is extra odd, because that's the driver default. But other than that, everything works 100%, flash video playback included.

I'll test the Kubuntu and Kubuntu NBR images later.

Oh, and the official docs are up on the http://help.ubuntu.com site today. So that concludes the 9.10 release.

Oh yeah, I should probably give an idea of boot time for my netbook, about 17 seconds from grub to gdm login prompt, 10 seconds shutdown. That's good going. I could probably boot faster with gentoo/einit, but that's still pretty respectable.
