    Missing Icon

    Hi there,
I've got a problem with an icon, or rather the fact it is not there.

The icon that is missing is the Outlook Express one, from my start menu.
"A picture speaks a thousand words" so the screen-shot below should fill in my gaps.

If you know how to get this back, I'd be greatly appreciative of your help.
Below is a list of things that I've had a stab at already.
    • Removing the shortcut from the start menu and replacing it.
    • Changed my mail client to another variant and back
    • Checked to see if the icon is still where it should be, it appears so.

Thanks in advance for your help!

This probably wont work but might be worth a try.
Go to the outlook .exe and copy a shortcut to your desktop, then try and change icon in properties. Drag to start menu. You have propbably tried this all ready. I had to create a new shortcut before it would let me change the icon.
    Anyway good luck

    directhex's system
download & install tweakui xp from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

run tweakui, under "repair" should be an option: "rebuild icon cache". do that.

Unfortunately, Still no luck. Even with the rebuild.

I have found out that by default, windows does appear to be looking for an icon from a file called msoe.dll ?

Also.. To try and keep the OS happy, I replaced this file to no avail.....

The icon library for Outlook Express is actually stored in the file 'MSOERES.DLL' which is located in the Outlook Express directory. Right click your shortcut and choose change icon, click browse and point it to this icon library and choose your default icon.

Thanks for the advice yamangman, but you cannot simply change the icon in that manner. If you note that this is a pinned icon in some "special" format to XP. I'm not sure, that outside the registry, this icon can be changed.

The above is probably your problem then, because you can change the icon for Outlook Express, and it's icon is stored in 'MSOERES.DLL'. What happens when you click the 'Change Icon' button? The same icon can also be found in MSIMN.EXE.

Sorry, I've not made myself clear.

When you right click this icon, no such properties menu appears. Instead the option for "Internet Properties" is displayed.

The only way to actually change the icon is to make a copy of this shortcut, say on my desktop, and I then have access to the correct menus to change the icon. Unfortunately, this method does not update the shortcut in the start menu.

The shortcut in my start menu is not a normal shortcut. Its the one created within "Taskbar and Startmenu Properties" (The "Customise" section).

Oh I see, in that case, create a new shortcut on the desktop, use the method above to get the correct icon, remove the old icon by unchecking the box in the customize part or the startmenu and taskbar properties dialog, then drag the new icon into the start menu (top or bottom half, I don't think it matters which).

The only difference being the right-click menu will just be your in it's standard shortcut properties context, ala...

I would do this, but I am cursed by the evil curse of perfectionism.

If you notice in my picture above, the icon is labelled "E-mail - Outlook Express". The label is changed to simply "Outlook Express" when making a shortcut manually.

You could rename the shortcut or add the appropriate comment manually when making a shortcut?

I know - I wasnt sure whether he was talking about the actual name of the shortcut or that hence I suggested renaming both.
