Currently got Windows and Ubuntu (which im currently loving - even though ive had to do a *lot* of reading on Linux, its worth it so far) installed on my laptop, but the windows install is hosed.
Windows was pre-installed from the manufacture, so it was full of useless junk anyway. Im concerned that when i reinstall windows however, its going to write to the boot sector, or some other magic and stop GRUB from booting the system ??

2) follow on-screen instructions to get to a console
3) type "grub-install /dev/harddrive" (probably hda for UDMA, or sda for SATA, but it sounds like you'll know what to put here)

1) insert the cd on the right (marked "try ubuntu")
2) reboot
3) when bored, select "shut down" from the gnome menu, and reboot back to windows, with 0 changes having been made to your pc

I've been using Ubuntu on my main PC for about 3 weeks and I now have debian on my server. I've learned a LOT in 3 weeks!

I've being using Debian as my main OS for about a year and a bit now. I am still of the opinion that Linux is only hard because you're used to Windows - I much prefer setting up Debian than Windows. Plus, you don't need to reinstall Debian every so often because it slows down! However, reinstalling Windows is even more a pain than usual because it destroys GRUB.
So, if I just have Debian and Windows 2000 installed, what's the easiest way to get GRUB back after reinstalling 2000?

I don't think sarge has a "rescue" option. it's worth trying. if not, run the installer as normal ("linux26"), get to the partitoning bit, switch to a text console with alt-f4, mount your normal system somewhere appropriate (for example, "mkdir /tmp/foobar/; mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/foobar; mount /dev/sda2 /tmp/foobar/boot"), switch to it with chroot (e.g. "chroot /tmp/foobar"), then run grub-install as above. "rescue" automates the mount-and-chroot functionality
