Re: Safe operating temp for laptop

    Hello there.

Just to add in this topic, my processers were operating at around 72°C idle, 90°C load.

I know thats already way too hot, and I've unfortunately had to send my laptop to HP in order to fix the issue, but ignoring whatever cooling/motherboard problem my laptop is facing...

    1. Would prolonged use of a laptop for gaming (I've had it for over a year and a half now) lead it to have higher temperatures?
    2. Would the accumulation of dust have anything to do with a more than 10°C increase in temps?
    3. Are laptops supposed to mantain their initial temps throughout their use and stand the test of time?

Sorry if these questions have already been answered, but I was unable to find specific answers regarding this issue.

If someone has posted it somewhere, and I haven't been observant enough to spot it, a link to that post would be great.

    Thanks

    1. Gaming produces higher temperatures in any system... but more so in laptops obviously, due to the confines of the casing.

    2. If you haven't cleaned the fans in the 18 months+ you've owned it, that could well cause a 10°c+ temperature increase!
And neglecting to clean the fans occasionally, will also undoubtedly cause an increased layer of dust on the internals as well, which will add to the temperatures.

    3. I think it's fair to say, you can expect laptop temperatures to rise a few degrees over time... however well you look after it (cleaning fans etc).
But they should remain well within the manufacturer's operating temperature specifications nonetheless, even if the laptop has been used primarily for gaming

Re: Safe operating temp for laptop

Thanks for that prompt response and that hearty welcome

Problem with my laptop, I can't seem to reach the fans.

I have an HP dv8000t, and unfortunately the only access I have is to the RAM, the hard drives, and the wireless card.

Besides that, dismantling the laptop to access the motherboard and cpu gets complicated.

I would need to pry open the keyboard which is not something I would like to do in case I mess up and ruin the wonderful keyboard I have on that laptop. In fact a friend of mine had to open up an HP laptop similar to mine, and when he put it back on some of the keys were not fully operational. I also believe that accessing this laptop to that level where I can clear the fans voids the warranty which expires in September 2009 (Extended guarantee).

I've had to send my laptop twice to HP now, the first time was because the video card overheated from me playing on my bed ( learned my lesson there ). So not voiding my guarantee would be highly preferable.

If anyone has any alternatives (besides laptop coolers) I would appreciate the advice.

Anyway, I'm hopefully going to build my gaming rig in October, so I won't be using my laptop for gaming hopefully besides when I am on vacation somewhere else, so hopefully I won't be stressing it too much over the next couple of years.

Or I could buy a new laptop...
