Make your own external dvd drive?

In my old PC I have a couple of oldish dvd burners sitting there. Does there exist some kind of caddy which I could put this drive into to make a external dvd burner? - if so what is it likely to cost?

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

Yes there is, i cant remember where i saw one but a quick google showed one from amazon.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/5-25-DVD-Dri...JHGVZ7EYQ23RKN
Not sure how that specific one works but they are roughly the same price as normal hard drive caddies so £15-£30(top end ).

    Hope this helped.

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

As Hicks indicated, these caddies are found at places such as Scan, Ebuyer, Amazon, just make sure you get the right one for your drives, in other words what are your drives, IDE or SATA?

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

Just be aware that these type of drives when used externally do require extra power
You will get a power adaptor as part of it, but you'll still need a wall socket to plug it into.

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

You could get a dual or quad bay enclosure if you have more than one drive - this would mean only one power plug.

I bought an old SCSI tower off eBay some time ago - it has 8 bays. I intend to fit it with some bridgeboards to allow drives mounted in it to be accessed. I could never decide which one to use, though - Firewire is best for many devices, whereas USB+eSATA is versatile and cheap, and LAN has it's uses (effectively making it a NAS). I could even fit it out with a combination of bridgeboards.

For occasional use these work well
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-2-5-.../dp/B000Q5YW76

I use one with my MSI wind, also handy for trouble shooting, copying data, etc.

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

@Fibb - that looks pretty useful.

I have an Acer Aspire One (recently recovered) and from what I gather being able to hook a DVD drive up to it has several advantages - so rather than fork out for a retail external one (unknown cost actually?! lol) I thought I could make one with an old Pioneer, IDE, drive which I have knocking around.

Re: Make your own external dvd drive?

I've had a couple of them from ebay, postage tends to be cheaper than from other shops. Just make shure it comes with the power brick, some do some dont.

Yeah... those multi-adapters can be very handy (I have the Nexons one meself), but if you want a 5.25" enclosure... they're available on Ebay for around £16/£17 delivered.
These two for instance, are both supplied with power adapters
