    New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

I'm thinking of getting a new mouse for less than £20. I have had a quick look around and have arrived at two choices:-

    Gigabyte GM-M6900 For £15

    Or

Logitech MX518 Optical Wired Gaming Mouse For £18 (thanks Flibb from the other thread).

    Any input welcome.

I thought I would go the whole hog and get a mat too. I have no idea what to look for and there seem to be a few options but I don't want to end up paying another tenner or so and have something I don't really like. My previous mats were heap and I have pretty muh given up on them; the chipboard surfae on my desk has worn a bit thin. Cutting mats seem to be a good alternative and do these work okay?

    Fanks in advance.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

I can not recommend the MX518 enough, it's just fantastic and seems to go forever.

As for a mat I like the Razer eXactMat but not sure how much it is these days or even if its still available.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

logitech are known for their excellent customer service, especially when it comes to repairs/replacements etc.

Mind you the other looks decent too, but I've not read much reviews on it

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

I've tried two Gigabyte mice, although not the one listed above. Both had serious design flaws and I wouldn't recommend. The only niggle with the mx518 is it being limited to 125hz without the use of a driver hack.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

I have the mx518 and the g5, I preferred the g5 over the 518, the g5 has a slightly higher dpi and the adjustable weights which won't make difference but is noticeable.

I would recommend the logitech g500, for the mouse mat i have one similiar to this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/shark...-355mm-x-254mm

Its thinner than most other mousemats but because its less spongy its better for gaming.

I had a Gigabyte GM-M6800, I never found any serious design flaws, only issue I had was the lightweight plastic used gives it a cheap feel, glueing some coins in it helped improve the balance and give it some weight, paxmate on the inside dampened the hollow sound if you tap it.
Still a great mouse for under £10
After a spot of repainting it looked amazing too.

One thing I will point out is that the GM-M6900 is optical not laser, the GM-M6980 is the laser version.

I really like laser mice, why? no mouse mat needed, a smooth, clean desk surface and a mouse glides across it so well.

I picked up one of the cherry evolution mice when they where £12, I like it so much that when play had them on even more reduced sale (under £7) I bought another.
really nice, solid construction, I only have one slight issue, the speed selector switch is rather stiff so not much use for changing dpi on-the-fly in a fast paced fps.
Doesn't have a side scrolling wheel but does have a 2way rocker behind the wheel which is very natural to use.

    [[][][][][][]][][][

guess what I bound the rocker too

mx518 plus QcK mini or a just an even cheaper cloth pad. Cloth> hard surface ... you don't have to replace mouse feet with a cloth pad.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

Have had an MX518 for a few years now and no complaints. Great feel for right handers. For a mat I've got an Everglide Titan, just cos I like a large mouse mat.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

The GM-M6800 has built in line prediction, making it unsuitable for almost all uses imo. Some people don't notice tho. If you try to draw a circle in paint, it will draw a rectangle instead. Being too light was my other complaint about it. The mouse had a decent and comfortable shape tho with nice buttons.

Mx518 works great straight on a desk without a mat.

Re: New Mouse and Mat Suggestions

    Thanks all.

The 518 looks great but has been around for 5 years; not sure this actually is a problem. I'm still leaning towards the GB one; there is one review on another site where they say its very nice.
Thanks for the ideas on mouse mats; my previous ones have been cloth albeit cheap ones. The g5 seems to be about £40 and EOL from the froogle search I got. I'll keep an eye out though.

Unfortunately looking through eaby for mice and pads is a nightmare.
I'll keep looking as xmas is a while away so maybe I can get santa to bring me a new mouse!

I've always been happy with logitec mice too, but I'm impressed to see everyone agrees, I currently have a MS mouse which is fine, but I think I'll go back to Logitec next

I read on these forums that people have used a mouse mat from a teflon baking tray, it only costed them a few quid too.

I've considered the Kinzu myself, but there are a lot of reports about negative acceleration (the mouse just stays in place when you move it quickly), so I've dropped it from my considerations. Google "kinzu acceleration" to see what I'm talking about.
