    What wired keyboard & mouse?

2020 UPDATE EDIT (READ FIRST): Please note that this thread has been resurrected only to provide an update on how my choices fared (see post #15 below), the request for suggestions has long been solved.

I have been happy for a number of years with the size and features of my Microsoft Wireless Media Desktop set (Wireless Keyboard 1000 v1 + Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 v1), but it has now come to a time in which despite this, I am no longer willing to put up with the annoyances caused by the position of the receiver having to be adjusted when it's not in the perfect spot for both the keyboard and mouse, and thought I should finally make the switch back to wired.

As a result, what similar (inc. media keys, integrated numpad, mouse side buttons) options do I generally have, preferably low-cost (around £30)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: What keyboard & mouse?

I'm using a Logitech G602 which is a wireless mouse, I don't have any issues with the receiver and the battery on this mouse is fantastic, I bought the mouse around the end of January or start of February and it has only recently reported that the battery has dropped below 5%, IMHO this mouse is awesome.

I don't really see the point in getting a wireless keyboard though, as my keyboard hardly ever moves from its place on my desk.

As mentioned above, just something similar to what I currently have (which isn't gaming-orientated) but wired. I might still end up gaming on it occasionally, but that is not what I want to focus on.

Thanks for the recommendation, however I really don't want to choose wireless at all at this point (regardless of who it is by) and want the peace of mind given by wired that I know it will be registering everything I type and click. As a result I would agree with you regarding the wireless keyboard as that is exactly how I feel about the keyboard and mouse too - they don't need to be moved, so it's better to have the reliability of being wired.

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

    Hi
The mouse i'm currently using and have been for about a year and a half is this mouse
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker%C2%AE-...ds=anker+mouse
Wired, has some programmable buttons and is a nice size, for my hand at least. I have average sized hands. It's also very cheap for what you get. Had no issues with it so I would recommend it.
As for keyboard I don't think mine would be appropriate, because it has light up keys and not many add-ons
    But this is it nonetheless
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perixx-PX-10...erixx+keyboard
I'm soon going to be upgrading to the new razer blackwidow, but I must say this keyboard has served me well, had it for about a year and a half as well, had no problems with it either, good for the price.
Check out amazon and such, i'm sure you could get a very good keyboard with plenty of gadgets for a low price

    Thanks for the recommendations.

Would everyone agree that I should be looking more towards choosing a keyboard and mouse separately rather than looking for a combined set?

That's something that I would agree with, I find it unlikely that you would find a set where both the mouse and the keyboard are exactly what you are looking for.

There is a Zalman mouse and a Zalman keyboard that I have seen, both together would come to £13.34. I haven't used them but if I were looking to buy a cheap keyboard and mouse to add to a build then I do like the look of these.

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

Thing about mice and keyboards is you get what you pay for, unless its razer, which are overpriced.
I've bought cheap mice such as those before and they didn't last very long, I tend to find the click breaks, usually when you click it does 2 clicks instead or just stops working altogether
Its true that this can happen to every mouse, it's just a lot more likely with very cheap ones.
I wouldn't say you need to spend a fortune on a mouse/keyboard though, ones such as razer are just for the aesthetics
But hey, if you did buy a £5 mouse and it works for 4/5 years, you got yourself an absolute bargain

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

Although I wasn't particularly aiming in the direction of gaming-focused ones, that is what I ended up with anyway as it seemed that they were the only type that fit what I was looking for.

At least it should mean that they are built to withstand plenty of punishment.

    Keyboard: Logitech G110
    Mouse: TeckNet M268

Thanks again to everyone for their input.

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

Really good keyboard and cheap mouse. Pretty interesting combination there
It would be nice to know how the mouse performs after a few months, I am thinking of getting a new one myself

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

There are no customisation options on this particular mouse, so if you wanted the side buttons or the middle-click to do anything other than the default behaviour (forward/back and scroll) then it wouldn't be the one to choose. The button below the scroll wheel is the one to change DPI (1000/1600/2000 - default is 1000), but it's probably not going to get much (if any) use out of myself.

I definitely like it better than the previous Microsoft mouse, as it immediately hit me how much easier it is to have both side buttons on the left as opposed to having one either side of the mouse. The weight seems to be just right, but that is likely another thing that depends upon personal preference.

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

Side buttons on the left is something I like as well, my current mouse has them. The DPI settings might not be a big issue, I sometimes have to change my DPI down if a friend uses my mouse, they reckon its far too sensitive, but I guess its what you are used to, I think my current DPI is 4000, although I turn it right down for CS:go.
I always make mice the heaviest they can be, not sure why, maybe its just habit.

I'm looking at a few mice currently, for when my current one packs up, the one you got is a possibility I think. I tend to wear mice out very quickly because I play games where you tend to spam left click, in fact my finger is actually a bit sore because of that

Just to clarify in case it wasn't obvious - you are unable to change the weight of this one.

As for spamming the left click to wear things out, I doubt my usage will be anything like that so would not be the best person to advise if/how long it can withstand it.

Re: What wired keyboard & mouse?

As an update almost 6 years later, my Logitech G110 keyboard is still going strong.

The TeckNet M268 mouse ended up having one of the side buttons break off a few days ago without me even noticing it somehow until the next time I went to use it, pretty much ruining my browsing experience as using the side buttons for forward/back (but especially back) is something I do pretty much constantly. I had been waiting for an excuse to replace it for a while though, as it seemed that light clicks failed to register as time went on, and so clicking pressure had to increase to make sure it did (and even then it didn't always).

As I'm happy with the other Logitech products I own, I looked in that direction and bought a G203 Lightsync from Amazon for £24.99.

I have since seen on HUKD that it was/is available at Currys/PC World for £19.99 with a code. I would have still chosen Amazon however due to how quickly I needed the mouse, especially since I have Prime anyway.

One small annoyance is that moving the mouse re-enables the illumination on the keyboard when I move it, no matter how many times I toggle the keyboard's illumination off again, but it's easy enough to ignore.

It doesn't show up in LGS (Logitech Gaming Software), as it's apparently only been released (this version at least) in April according to Amazon (where it is listed as the 2nd Gen of the G203), and Logitech are now using software called G HUB.

Unfortunately from what I gather, it's something that requires access to the internet at all times, otherwise it will just show a Logitech loading type animation. A bit of searching suggests it's mainly aimed to appeal to streamers.

I don't understand the point in that, it should just be standalone with the option to check for updates and other online features, without being reliant on it, just like the previous software. I know when I tried it, I just got the endless loading animation.

I did block the application's access the first time, so it's not a surprise there, but a subsequent time it seemed it didn't like if you weren't lightning fast to allow its access through the firewall either (although the installation seemed to act similarly to that too).

A search also seems to suggest that even when it does load, it's hit and miss as to whether it actually detects your devices or not, and everyone generally hating it.

So I'm going to stick with the previous software. I'm not really bothered about the inability to tweak the RGB of the mouse, or possibly other buttons, as it already does what I want it to (including the DPI button as far as I can tell) as it automatically installed the correct drivers for it.

I can ignore the whole G110 illumination issue easily enough anyway.
