ok so my pc died last night at some point .. went to bed turned it off .. this morning it try's to start then just shuts off ..
I'm not getting any solid led's have tried another vid card so not that ..
psu is newish evga 850 ..so cant see it being that ..
going to order a phen x3 ..£20 see if it's the chip .. it's over 5 yrs old running at 5ghz but always been water cooled ..
dam thing could have waited another couple of months .. until zen comes out

CPUs don't tend to randomly fail, especially after that amount of time. PSUs do go pop, even new ones. And motherboards do spew their capacitors.

get the q-led's then switches off would have thought if it was cpu .. one would stay on and red .. next thing to check is cpu should be here tom ..
if i's the board well I can see a lot of stuff on ebay ...and me waiting for zen .. theres always fishing ..

Don't get me wrong, it could be the CPU, but I'd say it's more likely to be the motherboard. Especially if it's been sat in-place and not had it's vulnerable pins exposed. The components on a motherboard are more susceptible to failure - and it's usually the bit that deals with power.
I'd lean more toward it being the board, it's a lot rarer for CPU's to die in situ, than for motherboards to go wrong.
yeah I can see what your saying ..but if it was the board then I'd of thought it wouldn't even do the q-led set of lights ..
could it be the ssd ? it's at that part where it would kick in it dies ..but then it would show on screen and not just die ...
last time it was the psu yr and a half ago ..not enough umpf to get it started .. but used a 430 this time hmmm but no fans just board and vid card hd ..

There's a lot on a motherboard to go wrong. A single component failing may not result in the entire board becoming unresponsive, where with a CPU it does tend to be complete death if they are damaged.
I've got a motherboard with a blown RAID controller on it, still works perfectly find apart from that.

Check if the motherboard is under warranty still!

well think it's the board .. but I'm not willing to spend more than £30 for a new one as in feb,march there will be a zen upgrade ..
so looking at ebay atm ..

ok heres an update ..my Supernova 850 G2 has died yep .. thx feck it has a 10 yr warranty and it's only 2.4 yrs old .. now the big question ..

Could be the motherboard dying damaged the PSU.
Having said that, when you spend a lot of money on a PSU that money is supposed to go on protection circuitry. That should be protection both ways, if the PSU starts to fail it should protect the connected components, if a component fails the PSU should shut down. So perhaps it really was just coincidence.
