How can this work???

Hi there,

I've just received a job-lot of computer bits. In it was what looked like a standard DVI to D-Sub VGA converter dongle - the type that are as common as that were included with many a graphics card (until recently when DVI-I was dropped!). On closer inspection, it doesn't have the 4 analogue pins (so in effect looks like a DVI-D), but otherwise like a standard dvi to VGA dongle.

What is the point of this dongle? Surely it has no point as it is not receiving an analogue signal to send to the D-Sub part? Unfortunately I've not got the kit to test it.

Is it a "fake" dongle?

Just intrigued as to whether this actually has a point somewhere or is in fact a completely pointless useless bit of kit someone has pointlessly manufactured?

I think it can use either the 4 pins around the wide-pin or some of the other pins in the main body.

DVI-A only requires a small amount of pins, I'm guessing yours has ALL the pins to the right of the wide pin?

Maybe someone pulled those four pins to get it to fit in to a DVI-D port?

EDIT: Which would make a useless adapter.

Yes, all the pins are present on the main bit of the DVI. It essentially looks like a DVI-D to VGA dongle, however, I thought the 4 pins around the long section were the only ones to carry the analogue signal.....

Hmm, digging around there is a very mixed reaction to DVI 24+1 to VGA converters

I'm guessing some GPUs will output analog over some of the base 24 pins....

We had some Matroxs cards at work that had a connector like that, it split to 2 VGA connectors.

I think they are the DMS-59 ones - they look a bit like DVI, but are actually different. Cheers!
