Sata Single Drive Raid

Need help. I've built a computer before but this is my first time with a Raid.
I have a Motherboard with a raid setup, hoping to save money now I bought a single Sata Hard drive, with plans to add another hard drive in the future. How do i set up a raid to use a single Sata hard drive. When i try to install windows xp it doesn't seem to recognize there is a hard drive attatched. Can i do this, use a single drive in a raid setup. I realize i won't get the benefits until i add another disk, but i don't have the money right now. Any help is appreciated.

You cannot have a single drive RAID but you can use a single drive on a RAID controller.
You need to load the RAID controller driver before trying to install Windows.
Have it on a floppy to hand & Windows should prompt you to hit F6 to load a driver.

If the RAID controller refuses to work unless you have a RAID setup running.. you can always just create a one disk RAID array.

just like buff says, you need to load the raid drivers before windows will recognise it - your motherboard should have come with a floppy containing the raid drivers (hope you have a floppy drive in your rig )

as you start the windows installation process it briefly flashes in the grey bar at the bottom of the screen "press F6 now to install 3rd party RAID or SCSI drivers" (you have to be quick to spot it!) it doesn't pop up straight away but about a minute later it'll prompt for the drivers disk

And as far as we can tell, no floppy drive with drivers came with th eboard but i'll go check. Thanks guys

OK, then there will be a set of drivers on the motherboard drivers CD; these should be copiable to a floppy. Drivers also downloadable from http://www.asus.com.tw/support/downl...37.zip~zaqwedc and the download contains a utility for making your floppy.

And set first boot device to SCSI or RAID (assuming you're putting your OS on the SATA disk).

No luck. It makes us try to set up a RAID 0+1 for the hard drive and it seems to recognize it, but when we stick in the floppy and try to install the '3rd party' drivers it says we must insert disk labeled Factory install disk or something similar. We tried from that link you gave us, and the one on the CD and both show the same insert disk labeled factory install disk error.
We'll keep trying and I'll see if I can find anything anywhere else. Any ideas, even if they might be wrong, please post I'm willing to try!! This is a WD raptor HDD if that helps at all.

the usual form things should be on the floppy disk is a file called txtsetup.oem on the root, with the driver files laid out as they are in the driver download (usually in the root of the floppy as well, at the very least a .inf and .sys file)

From the download link you have to uncompress the files and use the included "Makedisk" utility to create the floppy as described by directhex.

You may very well be able to set up the SATA disk on the Raid controller without using the F6 prompt when installing XP, I've done that before OK.

XP will use it's own controller drivers. When it's finished installing, you can then load the Raid drivers from your motherboard CD.

It doesn't always work, depends on the Raid controller, but it's worth a try.

Hey everyone we got it working yesterday. Sorry I didn't leave any information about it but we got so caught up in setting everything up I just kind of forgot. I'm typing on it right now. It's very neat but I am having a few internet issues which I'll make a new thread. The problem was that the floppy drive doesn't work. After about 4 hours of trying to install the drivers we took my drive onto my mother's PC to test it out, and that was the problem. Everything went smoothly after that. Thanks a lot everyone!!!
